The call came at a little after two in the morning on an otherwise quiet night.
"Sky she's gone," the voice on the other line said.
"What? When?" she said already throwing clothes into her black duffel bag.
"About an hour ago in her sleep. Sweetheart I'm so sorry."
Skylar couldn't speak anymore because of the potato sized lump that had decided to form in her throat as the information started to sink in. Her mother was gone. Granted when the doctor had diagnosed her with brain cancer six months ago Skylar knew that this day would come but not this soon. She had just seen her mom two days ago and she had seemed fine almost like there was nothing wrong.
"Sky? Are you there?" the voice shook her from her thoughts and she cleared her throat.
"I'm on my way," she said walking out the door to the apartment she shared with two of her friends.
"Drive safe."
She rolled her eyes at the statement. Granted she always did drive safe even if it was ten twenty or sometimes thirty miles per hour above the speed limit.
"Always Alicia," she said beeping the doors to her midnight black Ford MustangGT open after hanging up the phone.
She had saved up her money since she was young. When young children were spending their money on candy and video games, Skylar was holding on to hers. Her actions met her mother's approval even when others were concerned.
"She knows that I will provide whatever she needs so she's wise to save it for more important things," her mother would always defend her. She even went as far as having Skylar open a savings account when she was six. Every cent she earned was put in there and by the time Skylar was off to college she had a nice sum of cash to not only pay for what her scholarship didn't cover but for her car as well.
She tossed her bag in the back then sat in the driver's seat clenching the steering wheel with both hands for a moment as she tried to blink away her tears. She then started the car belted herself in and pulled out into the street heading home.
As soon as she left the city she flipped on the police scanner she had installed under her seat to alert her off any upcoming police then floored it hitting the clutch and shifting her car quickly reaching well over the speed limit as she made her way to San Francisco. She reached over adjusting the volume on her radio without taking her eyes off the road. She was now in her own zone the lights of Sacramento long since had faded from her rear view mirror.
Her mind wondered to her graduation that was going to happen today. She was thankful that she wasn't valedictorian so her presence wouldn't be missed but still the idea of seeing her mom's reaction to her news of being just one percent below the valedictorian made her smile for just a moment. The smile quickly faded as she realized that she wouldn't be able to show her mom the degree she had earned or hear how proud she was of her.
Skylar sighed and slowed down as the lights of San Francisco came into view. She drove down taking mostly back roads to the familiar little house that she and her mother had lived since before she could remember. She pulled the car up flipping the switch to the automatic door to the garage and pulled her car inside.
Skylar had barely turned off her car and gotten out when Alicia was outside wrapping her arms around her hugging her tight.
"I told you to be safe," she chided as Skylark reached into the back seat of the car for her bag.
"I was," she replied as she slyly turned off the scanner under her seat before closing the door the sound echoing off the walls of the garage.
Alicia just shook her head saying nothing more as they walked into the house.
