Skylar slowly opened her eyes and rubbed her aching neck realizing she'd fallen asleep on her mother's bedroom floor. She sat up just as Alicia entered the room.
"You slept on the floor?" she asked confused as to why she didn't just curl up on her mother's bed.
Skylark nodded as she stood up and brushed off the lint that the carpet had left on her jeans and shirt, "I didn't mean to. I was just thinking of Mom then started crying and I guess I fell asleep."
"Well, I was coming in to wake you up anyways seeing as how the funeral is in about three hours. I thought you'd want to eat something and take a shower."
Skylar walked over to where Alicia stood in the doorway and picked up her bag.
"I'm not really hungry Alicia," she said softly.
"You need to eat Sky; you're too thin as it is."
Skylar sighed but nodded, "I'll eat a little something to make you happy."
Alicia nodded and turned going downstairs while Skylar walked the short distance to her room and closed the door behind her. She tossed her bag on the black and purple comforter that covered her twin sized bed. Much like her mother's room her room had not changed either. Posters of various movie stars and a few of cars hung on her purple and black walls with tape, pushpins or whatever she could grab when she hung them up.
She walked over to the closet and started looking through her clothes finally pulling out the only black dress she owned. The simple a-line dress hit just above the knee and had a simple princess cut neckline. She laid it out on the bed then tried to find a decent pair of shoes finally finding a black pair of ballet flats under her bed. She moved to her dresser grabbing herself some undergarments and walking into her bathroom.
She walked over to the shower and turned on the water removing her clothes as she waited for the water to heat up. Once the water was hot, she turned the knobs until the water was the right temperature and stepped inside. She quickly washed her hair and body the warm water working out some of the aches and pains she had from sleeping on the floor in her mother's room.
Stepping out from the shower she wrapped a towel around her then walked over to the steam fogged mirror. She took a hand and wiped the mirror off grimacing at her reflection once the mirror was clear enough to see. Her green eyes were bloodshot and puffy from all the crying she'd done last night accenting the dark circles under her eyes. She sighed and went out to her bedroom and over to the bed to her duffel bag. After unzipping it she pulled out her makeup bag and flat iron before going back into the bathroom.
She did her makeup quickly making sure to keep it light knowing that it'd most likely be gone from the tears she'd be shedding at the funeral while the flat iron heated up. Once satisfied with her makeup she picked up the flat iron and was fixing to straighten it when she remembered something her mother had told her.
"I miss your wavy hair Sky and you should too. Why young girls nowadays feel the need to change everything about them I'll never understand."
She shut the flat iron off deciding to honor her mother by leaving her her brown wavy hair as is and instead added some gel to her hair to accent the waves while keeping them in line so they wouldn't go frizzy as the day went on. She went back out and started getting dressed and was slipping on her shoes when there was a knock at the door.
"I just wanted to let you know that your breakfast is downstairs and waiting," Alicia said from the other side of the door. Skylar opened the door and gave her a small smile.
"Thanks, I'll be right down."
Alicia nodded then smiled as well. "Your mother would have liked your hair today," she said lightly touching the girl's hair tears threatening to fall from her eyes.
"I know," was all Skylar could whisper out as her eyes filled with tears, "I'm going to go eat," she said quickly as she brushed passed Alicia and down the steps to the kitchen while wiping away the few tears that had escaped.
She poured herself a cup of coffee then grabbed the toast that Alicia had cleverly set by the coffee and took both to the table. She had just taken a bite of the toast when the phone rang. She grabbed the phone that was on the table and looked at the caller id her eyebrows furrowing as she noticed that the number calling was a Los Angeles number.
"Hello?" she said hesitantly. She heard voices in the background and what she could have sworn was the revving of an engine before the caller answered.
"This is a friend of Renee's. I just saw the obituary in the paper. I'm sorry for your loss," a deep voice finally said on the line.
"Th- thank you," she said looking at Alicia as she came down the stairs.
"Who is it?" she mouthed to her. Skylar shrugged her shoulders and shook her head mouthing back "No clue". Alicia quickly took the phone from Skylar.
"Who is this?" she said sharply her eyes widening as the caller answered. Skylar watched curiously as she finished the toast.
"Yes, it's at the little cemetery right by the high school on twenty-second street."
Skylar got up going over to the sink to rinse off her plate.
"Do you know if any of her family is coming?"
That question caused Skylar to turn around quickly while she waited for the caller to answer. She saw Alicia frown.
"I see. The funeral will be held at three."
Skylar watched Alicia nod then tell the caller goodbye and hang up.
"Who was that?" she asked as soon as Alicia had set the phone down on the table.
"A friend of your mother's from high school. He said he saw the obituary in the paper in LA and wanted to come."
"What kind of friend?" Skylar asked knowing that she wasn't getting the whole story. Alicia looked up at the clock then back to Skylar.
"Sit down sweetheart, I think it's time you knew," she said pulling out a folder from on of the kitchen drawers as Skylar sat down.
