Chapter 6: Nothing to Remember
I was dreading this day. I had been dreading it for a while. They day I would have to go back to school. I hadn't seen anyone since the day I had almost blown everything up. Everyone had seen me for who I really am, and I can't do anything to change it.
I was braced for the stares, for people to run out of my way and avoid me, while still talking about me behind my back. I was ready to be left alone most of the time, and then confronted as a freak.
I wasn't ready for what came.
"Don't make me go," I pleaded to Nick as he turned the corner.
"You have to. I'm really sorry, but you know you have to."
This argument had been continued for almost three days now, and Nick wasn't budging at all.
I got out of the car and grabbed my bag. My goal for today was to make it through the day without exploding. It was going to be a challenge.
I got into the locker room later than I normally did. There were a few people already in there, and they looked up at me as I walked in. Please don't say anything, I thought.
"Hey, Courtney!" Sammy said as she saw me. "I heard about your parents. I'm really sorry."
I wasn't expecting that. "Thanks," I replied. I grabbed my books and put them in my backpack.
"Are you ok?" she asked me.
"What?" I asked.
"I mean, your parents just died in a break-in, and you watched it happen. Are you ok?"
"How did you know that I saw it happen?" I asked.
"That's what someone said. Is that not true?"
"I saw the robber before I ran out the back. I didn't see him kill anyone."
"But are you ok?"
"I guess. I don't know."
"I'm surprised you're back in school," Rachel said.
"Nick made me. I didn't want to come," I replied. No one was bringing up the fact I had disintegrated part of the hallway. "I have to go see some teachers for makeup work," I said as a started walking out of the locker room.
"See you at lunch," Kelly said.

After school, I was sitting in the bleachers of the gym. There wasn't anything going on, I just needed to get away from everyone. The door opened and Nikki walked in. She climbed up the stairs to the top row and sat down next to me.
"You ok?"
"Everyone keeps asking me that."
"That's because we're concerned. We have no idea what you're going through. I can't imagine having my family killed."
"I don't want to talk about it," I said abruptly.
"Ok. Did you hear about what happened to the science hallway?"
I didn't answer her. She knew that it was me, why was she bringing it up?
"Someone donated a ton of money and their remodeling the wing. They took out all the doors already so they could bring the equipment in and out."
I was shocked. "No, I didn't know about that."
"Yeah. That was pretty much the only exciting thing that happened when you were gone."
"Besides the pounds of makeup work I have to do."
She laughed. "Yeah. But it's always a lot of work. I have to go now, but if you need anything, just call me."
I nodded. "Ok."
She walked down the stairs and out of the gym. As I got up and walked towards the door, it opened and Molly walked in.
"Hey," she said. "I've been looking for you all day."
"Really? What's up?" I asked.
"First of all, I'm sorry about your parents. I hope you're ok."
"Thanks."
"And the other thing, how did you make everyone forget what happened with your powers?"
My heart stopped. "What?"
"Everyone seems to think that it was something the school did to renovate, but I watched you do it. A lot of people watched you do it. But no one remembers."
"Look, I don't know what you're talking about. I wasn't here when it happened. I didn't find out until Nikki told me a few minutes ago."
"Courtney, I saw you three days ago. It was the day after you had left school early and your parents were killed. And I can tell you it was no accident that the person found your house. They weren't robbing your family; they were coming after you."
I shook my head. "No, they weren't. I don't matter to anyone. The police said it was just a break in. And how did you figure all this out?"
"The police were wrong. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about. You're not the only one with secrets. There is no Molly." Suddenly, she flickered and her features transformed into ones that I recognized. The red-ish hair and the hazel eyes. I had met her only once, briefly.
"You were with me in the parking lot," I said.
She nodded. "I've been trying to solve a mystery and a problem in my life. I was able to figure out what her plan is. She found you, Courtney. I don't know how she did or why, but she knew about your powers."
"Who? And how did she find out? My powers haven't come into full effect until less than a week ago."
"I don't know either. But I knew I had to stop her. So I disguised myself as another student and came to school here. I could see your power working inside of you, but you didn't have the capability to let it out. So I altered your memory."
"You did what?"
"One of my powers is telepathy. I can communicate with people inside their heads. With my team before, they knew I could do it. But you didn't know. You just thought it was your memories. All those bad experiences that fueled your hate and power. None of it was real. I didn't want to make your life seem like that, but I didn't have a choice."
"So when I asked people why you were so mean to me, and they said you weren't, they weren't lying."
She shook her head. "No. It was all in your head."
"Who's after me? You still never answered that."
Molly looked around and then said quietly. "My mom."
