Chapter 4

When I got home, neither of my parents were home, but the door was cracked slightly open, despite the chill outside. I walked inside and pulled the door shit behind me, trying to shut out the horrible day I had at school. "Hey Court. You're home early." It was my little sister, Katie. We fought a lot, but we're sisters, what else are we supposed to do.

"Is Nick here?" I asked.

"He's still at school. Why aren't you?" she asked as she put the TV remote down and looked at me.

"I had to come home. Why aren't you at school?" I had to wait until Nick was here until I told them. I had to tell them both. They were the only people I trusted.

"8th graders got off today. Why did you have to come home?" Katie just kept trying to get answers, but I couldn't tell her. Not now.

"I'll tell you when he gets home."

"Why can't you tell me now?"

"Katie, please. He has to be here when I tell you."

She seemed to tell that something was really wrong, and when Nick got home they both came into my room. I was thinking really hard, trying to erase what had happened at school today. Was there a chance that no one would remember? No, they had all seen. I couldn't do anything now. I just wish there was a way to make that hallway incident never happen. That no one would remember.

"Courtney, what's up?" Nick asked.

"Close the door," I said. My blinds were pulled shut and the lights were low. They both seemed really creeped out. Nick closed the door and stood next to Katie. "What I'm about to tell you, you can't tell anyone. Not even mom and dad. If I decide to tell them, I will tell them."

"Are you doing drugs or something?" Katie asked, looking around the room for whatever I was hiding. She didn't realize that what I was hiding was coming from within me.

"No." I closed my eyes and channeled my emotion from today. But there was something missing. I needed a quote.

I couldn't think of anything. All the books I had ever read, all the quotes that had been stuck in my head before, but now there was nothing.

"Never mind guys. It's not working."

"Courtney? Are you ok?" Katie asked.

"Fine. Just don't tell anyone about this."

They both nodded, despite the fact they had no idea what was going on.

Later that night at dinner, no one really talked. "I got a call from your school today, Courtney," my mom said.

My heart stopped. "About what?"

She laughed. "About what? I think you know. How you went home sick."

I nodded. "Yeah, I wasn't feeling well at all. I think something's going around at school."

My mom nodded. "If you need anything, just let me know." I nodded.

The rest of dinner was uneventful, and once I finished I went up to my room. Katie came up a few minutes later. "You weren't sick, were you?"

I shook my head. "I can't explain it."

"Go ahead and try."

I heard the doorbell ring downstairs and one of my parents walking to get it.

"Look, I can't explain it. It's not that I don't want to, it's that I don't know what's going on. I really don't."

She put her hand on my arm. "Can I do anything to help?"

Then I heard a scream from downstairs and a gunshot. "Get behind me," I said. I heard footsteps running up the stairs. Nick ran into my room and slammed the door.

"Someone's robbing the house," he said.

Because that's what you and I do, protect each other.

I had a quote. I could feel the power now. "Nick, get behind me."

"Courtney, I got this."

"No you don't." I walked over to the window with Katie. "I need you two to hold hands and don't leave each other until you're somewhere safe."

I opened the window until it was as far as it could go. Then I put my hands on the screen and imagined the screen vaporizing. It did. I heard Katie gasp. Nick grabbed Katie's hand and I pulled them out the window and started flying.

"You're a superhero," Katie said.

"Tell absolutely no one."

We landed and they took off running. Nick looked back at me, and I nodded. I had to do this by myself.

The front door was already open, and I walked inside. I saw my mom's body lying in the hallway and I could feel my power boiling inside me. It was all I could do to keep in under control.

The robber came around the corner and pointed his gun at me. I blinked and the gun exploded. He stepped back in surprise, but then he recovered and grabbed a knife from his pocket and ran at me.

I don't know how this worked, but I just knew it would. He ran right through me. I spun around and punched him in the head. I guess more power was in it than I thought, because he was knocked out cold.

I heard sirens in the distance, so I ran out the back door and off to find my siblings. The cops could take care of the rest.
