Chapter 10
"You don't normally make the plans, do you?" I asked as I turned on the TV.
"This is a great plan, you just don't appreciate it," Kade replied as he flipped the switches so all the lights were on.
"I don't appreciate the electric bill, either. In case you didn't know, my family doesn't have a dependable source of income."
"I'll write a check."
I rolled my eyes. "Right because your family is rich as well as superheroes and then you had a branch that turned evil."
Kade actually laughed. "Basically."
The door opened and Katie and Nick walked inside, bringing with them a wave of wind that knocked some papers off the counter.
"Court!" Katie smiled as she ran over to me and stepped over the papers without even noticing. "You're ok!"
"Yeah," I hugged her back. "Look, I hate to be so blunt, but you guys have less than five minutes to pack, if we're lucky."
"What?" Nick asked. "Where are we going?"
"I'm sending you to Aunt Sarah's."
"Arizona?" Katie was surprised. "How are we getting to Arizona?"
"I've been working on my powers, and my teleporting is working now."
"You aren't throwing us through some time-space continuum while you stay here with-" Nick suddenly seemed to realize Kade was there.
"Kade. He's been helping me. And I know it isn't ideal, but you guys aren't superheroes, you can't handle it."
"Until a few days ago, you couldn't either," Nick replied.
"But I can now!"
"Can you really, Courtney? Or is one little phrase going to cause you to destroy the world? If you can't think of a quote, you're just as powerless as you say we are."
"What?" Kade asked.
"You didn't tell him that part?" I didn't exactly get why Nick was being so mad right then. He didn't seem to think I could handle myself.
I rolled my eyes. "It's been getting better."
"What's been getting better?" Kade asked.
"You know how I can't really control my powers? Like with Cameron? Yeah, it's because my powers are somehow linked to something in my head and certain words or sentences activate them and I can't always control them."
"So basically all you need is a Pintrest board of motivational quotes?" Katie asked.
The two boys glared at her.
"I'm just trying to help," Katie said as she held her hands up in defense and took a step back. Her foot slid on one of the papers on the floor, and I noticed one that definitely wasn't there earlier, and definitely shouldn't be there at all.
"Look, please just go pack. Just in case," I pleaded with Nick. "I can do this. I need to do this. It's the only way I can make everything ok."
Nick crossed his arms as the sound of Wheel of Fortune in the background filled the silence. "You know how much I hate this idea, don't you?"
I nodded. "But I know how much you believe in me. And you know that I wouldn't do this unless I had to."
Nick motioned to Katie and the two went upstairs. I dashed over to the floor and pulled together all the papers, keeping the one that caught my eye to the side. "Kade. Kade, look at this," I said as I showed him.
