Chapter 7: No, I Would Not Like to Jump Off the Roof

"And you just expect me to trust you?" I asked. I looked down into the parking lot. "I've only flown once, and that's when I was completely out of control."

"Trust me. The only way you can master your powers is to test your limits with them. And I can't think of a better way to do that!" Molly said.

"I can. Basically anything but jumping off the roof." I don't know what Molly thought she was doing by having me come up here and do stupid stuff. I don't care how long she had her powers; I'm not jumping off a roof.

"If you can't do it, I'll catch you. Maybe. Depends how hard you're working."

I spun around and glared at her.

"There you go!" she said happily. "Now take that anger and find a quote. Then use that quote and jump!" She spread her hands happily and smiled.

"You seem to know an awful lot about my powers," I said.

"Quote. Think. Jump. Fly," she said, moving her hands with each word.

I closed my eyes and tried to think. "I can't do it. Whenever I try to think of one, it never comes. I have to be thrown into a situation and then it comes to me."

Molly turned around and looked at the baseball field on the other side of school. "I get what you're saying. When I first started with my powers, I had no idea what to do. I didn't have anyone to guide me either. But it gets easier. All you need is practice. Step by step. I don't expect you to jump into the deep end and be able to swim."

"Really?" I asked. "Thanks."

"No! Shut up and jump!" She spun around and blasted me off my feet. I fell backwards off the roof and all I could see was the blue sky above flecked with white clouds and Molly standing at the edge of the roof watching me.

Sometimes you fall before you fly.

Suddenly, I was soaring upward and I was face to face with Molly.

"There you go! See I told you that you could do it." She turned around and walked to the middle of the roof. "Ready for round two?"

"No. I'm going home." I started walking towards the stairs when Molly flew over me and blocked my path. I raised my hand and imagined a giant hand swatting her aside. I flicked my wrist and felt a strong breeze. Molly held up her hands and a blue force field appeared and blocked my giant hand.

"That was good," she said. "Didn't do anything to me, but it was good. We'll work on fighting once we get your base power down."

"What?" I asked. I had no idea what I just did, or how I had a giant, invisible hand appear (not really appear) out of nowhere.

"Don't worry about it now. We have to go to class."

I had completely forgotten about class. "The day hasn't even started yet?"

Molly laughed. "No. Don't worry. You can make it through."

I sighed and followed her down the stairs. "How did I just do that?" I asked.

"What, fly or the attack thing?"

"The attack thing."

She didn't answer right away. "The way I see it, you have raw power. I have set powers and can make more, but I need chemical help to do it. All you need is words. I have no idea how it works, since you've done a whole variety of stuff."
