Imagine..

The last time you went to the rink was when you fell and badly hurt your ankle. Skating used to be your passion. Ever since you were old enough to walk, you were gliding along the ice. As you got older, you would wake up as the sun rose and you would skate most of the day away. Routine combinations would dance through your mind as you skated. Of course, life always has different ideas for us. One day when you were practicing a turn in the air life decided to have you fall and injure your ankle. The injury would forever keep you from professional ice skating for the rest of your life. However life gave you something in return. Your best friend and boyfriend Michael.

So one day when the two of you were lounged out with each other, Michael out of the blue asked you if you would want to go ice skating. He thought it would be "a cute couples thing". You couldn't help but smile and slightly nod your head once he asked.

And today was the day you planned to go. You searched through your entire house looking for your old skates. Eventually you found them leaning against the wall of your crawl space. It was almost as if they've been waiting for you. Waiting for you like a long lost friend. As you pick them up memories start flooding your mind. Fortunately or unfortunately your memories are disturbed by the chime of your cell phone.

You smile at the text and finish getting ready. You dig up your old bag and start packing the skates and an extra pair of socks. After all is packed you find a scarf and gloves and start putting them on.

Another few minutes pass when you start to hear the rumble of the engine. That sound always made you excited, cause it meant you were leaving at least for a little while.

You grab the bag and walk it out to the car. Before joining Michael in the front you quickly throw the bag in the back. You hop into the front and you are greeted by a smiling Michael.

"Hey.." He says as he leans over and sets a kiss on your cheek. "You nervous about getting back out there?" He asked with caution aware of how  sensitive you are about the subject.

"Yeah I think so..it's not like I'll be doing routines and stuff but I think it'll be okay" you answer kinda sadly.

Michael smiles slightly feeling bad about making you upset. He quickly starts the car and drives towards the skating rink.

The silence is comfortable. Knowing your response before might have hurt him you reach over for his hand and hold it. He gently squeezes it before looking up at you.

Through all the years you've known Michael you always felt safe with him. You were always able to forget reality when you were together. But the one thing that always seemed to clear your mind of any demons were his tattoos.

You swear you can look at them forever. Even though he says the tattoos on his fingers mean nothing of significance, you always liked to come up with meanings behind them. You always wondered what they really meant to him behind all of that closed superior. One day maybe you'd find out.

After another 10 minutes of driving you finally reach the rink. The parking lot wasn't too full which you preferred.

When you get out the excitement from the past comes back. You suddenly feel like your fifteen years old again stepping into your first competition. However the slight stiffness of your ankle tells you otherwise.

Michael comes up behind you with the bag and takes your hand and leads you through the doors. Your both hit with the instant warmth of the fireplace in the middle of the room.

You take the skates out and start putting them on. You put them on with ease but when you look up Michael you can't help but smile at his struggle to put them on.

You quietly kneel down to his skate and tighten them to his ankle. You help him stand and you both walk to the ice.

Michael gets on before you somehow but immediately goes towards the wall. More cautious then what your used to you ease your way onto the ice. Once your on you stand straighter and make your way towards Michael.

He looks at you standing and he smiles knowing how much of a milestone it is for you. All you do is extend your hands out to him.

He takes them and you help him get to his feet. However being too clumsy for his own good he falls bringing you down with him.

You both fall non gracefully and you can't help but laugh at each other. People around you ask if your okay. You can't get the words out so you just nod.

You both get up and skate some more. You also fall some more. But if this was the only kind of skating you were allowed to do, you were perfectly okay with that.

After about an hour of falling and gliding you both decide to get off. This time Michael is the one to get your skates off followed by his own. Your legs feel like jello as you stand up but you also can't help but smile. Having those muscles being used again made you feel some kind of hope for skating again.

You walk back to the car with your arm around Michaels waist. Throwing the bag in the back before getting in the front.

Michael gets in and immediately puts on some Christmas music station. He starts singing  in his raspy voice that you couldn't help but love.

You scoot closer to him and kiss him in the cheek before resting your head on his shoulder. Knowing this is somethings you'll always remember.

Finally getting back on the ice with your best friend and love of your life next t0 you. The not so quiet ride home and muscles sore. Driving as the sun goes down and stars slowly come out.
