Laney:

We laid on the blanket eating junk food, which I would regret later, and just talked.

“What’s your favorite color?” he asked me, breaking a peaceful silence. I rolled onto my stomach and picked up a goldfish. “Yellow.” I said back to him. “Me too! Okay, what about your family? Are you an only child?” I shook my head. I could feel his crystal blue eyes watching the side of my face. I turned to meet his stare and gave him a smile. I couldn’t help but smile when I looked at him. “No, I have a twin brother.” His eyebrows shot up “Really?” I nodded and he turned onto his back and folded his arms under his head. “I was supposed to be a twin.” He said letting out a yawn.

I stood up and picked a can of blue silly string out of a bag. Niall was laying on the blanket with his eyes closed. I shook the can and took the lid off. I grabbed an orange can and held it in my free hand.

“Niall?” I asked guarding both cans behind my back. Without opening his eyes he let the word “Yeah?” escape his mouth. I sprayed him with the blue silly string and screamed “You’re it!” I stood at the edge of the blanket and watched his eyes as they shot open. He jumped up and I handed him the other can. I ran toward a tree and stood behind it. Suddenly he was chasing me and I felt the goo latch onto a bare spot on the back of my leg. We ran around for nearly two hours shooting each other with multicolored string from a can. The sky was growing dark and the street lights in the lot shot on.

“Are you cold?” Niall asked as we sat on the trunk of his shiny BMW. I shook my head “No.” he raised his eyebrows and grabbed my hand. “You’re shivering!” he said loudly. Even though it was almost July, there was a breeze running through the trees that chilled my skin. He let my hand go and hopped down. I watched as he picked up the light blue blanket and shook off the silly string and dirt. He wrapped it around my shoulders and I burrowed myself in it. I let out a yawn and he clapped his hands loudly. My eyes widened “What the hell’s that for?” I asked furrowing my eyebrows and scrunching my nose.

“We aren’t done! You can’t sleep yet!” I leaned back on his car and groaned, folding my arms over my eyes. I heard him fumbling around with plastic bags and sat up to see what he was doing. He put everything in the bags and asked me to hop down. I did and he stuffed everything besides the blanket that was still wrapped around me in the trunk. “Okay, let’s get you home. But we’re coming back again, okay?” I nodded, silently wondering why he was so adamant about spending time with me of all people.
