Addie:

I sat on my couch scrolling through my dashboard as my mom screamed to me from the kitchen. “Addison, take this garbage out before it gets too late, I’m not going to ask you again!” Her face appeared in the doorway to the living room, beat red. “Sounds more like a demand than a question.” I muttered under my breath as I slammed the lid on my laptop shut.

I pulled myself off the couch and dragged my feet along the floor into the kitchen. There was a black bag sitting by the front door. I lifted it off the floor and pulled the door open. I walked to the curb and set it beside the full barrels. As I did a silver BMW with tinted windows stopped in front of my best friend Laney’s house. Curious, I stood and watched as the passenger door was pushed open. Laney stepped out onto the side walk wrapped in a light blue blanket. She waved goodbye to the driver and closed the door.

The car pulled away and Laney made her way to her front door and pushed it open without a key. I walked back to my house and did the same. I grabbed my phone off the kitchen counter and scrolled to Laney’s name in my contact list. I quickly typed her a message.

Addie:

Where have you been all day?

I waited for a reply but nothing came. I looked at the time, it was 9:45. There was no way she was already asleep I thought so I took my laptop up to my room. Her room was right across from mine and I could see her light was still on. I sent her another text.

Addie:

Lane, you know you can tell me anything. I’ll be over in five.

Laney:

Fine but you have to promise not to freak.

Addie:

Promise.

I was nervous. Laney always told me everything. I got off my bed and turned out my light. I walked downstairs and skipped putting on shoes. “I’m going to Laney’s.” My mom didn’t respond so I just shrugged and walked out. When I got to her door I just walked right in, we never really knocked. I walked up her wooden stairs and got to her door.

“Lane?” I expected the worst. She opened the door and the tear stained cheeks I expected were dry and rosy. Her hair was in a side ponytail and she had on a pair of pajama shorts and a t shirt. I looked around her room as we walked in and sat on her bed.

“Woah!” I pointed to her blank wall where there had previously been posters. “What happened?”

A sweet smile planted itself across her lips “That’s exactly what we’re going to talk about!” she sounded mental. “Okay, you talk, I’ll listen.” She nodded and began.

“Yesterday we went to the movies right? Well remember we didn’t sit next to Sam or Riley, we were beside strangers.” I nodded letting her know she could continue. “The boy I was sitting beside was – and don’t freak out – was Niall Horan.” My jaw dropped. I couldn’t produce sound so I waved my hand, asking her to go on. “Right, well I gave him my soda because he was sipping his obnoxiously and after the movie when I was grabbing the trash he said he owed me, so I gave him my number since we were going to grab dinner already and he texted me this morning and took me rollerskating and for ice cream and to a random parking lot to play soccer and shoot each other with silly string. And that’s basically it.”

I finally regained my ability to speak “oh my fucking god.” She started to laugh. I pointed to the blanket I’d seen her get out of the car with. “What’s up with that blanket? You brought it on your date?” she giggled and shook her head. “He bought it and we brought it to the parking lot and laid on it to talk and eat snacks. Then I was cold so he put it on me and I guess I never really gave it back.”

We spent the rest of the night laying on her queen bed drowning in the perfection that was her day with Niall. We finally crashed around 1 am. I was under her favorite finding nemo blanket and she was wrapped up in the light blue one with her clover puppy by her head.
