I brushed my teeth with a stolen toothbrush, scraping my teeth clean from all the built up grime. A joyous smile wide on my face. A second later though, I bit down hard on the bristles and tried not to groan.
Renesme was trying to get in again. She was gripping at my head, clawing at the shield I held between us. I looked at the mirror and stared into her eyes. We're separated by thousands of miles of land and ocean, and yet she still found a way to accuse me.
"Your mind control could prove useful to aid in an uprising," Stephan said. I shut Renesme down before she could hear Stephan's words.
Him and Vladimir were sitting on the side of the tub, canoodling while I brushed my teeth. They found it fascinating that I had human needs to care for, that I couldn't just wander about aimlessly and never clean under my armpits. I had been travelling with them for two weeks. They were really entertaining company, and taught me so much about vampirism and the politics of the world I had overlooked while I was with the Volturi. Stephan and Vladimir let me ask questions, they didn't shut me up or tell me to listen to orders and stay quiet like Aro.
I looked at the two men through the mirror. Then spit out the bubbly red tooth paste of my bloody diet. "An uprising against what? Humans?"
"Against the Volturi," Vladimir said. "The humans are the easy part. All we have to do, is eat them. But the Volturi, are trickier. We haven't been able to stab at the weak spots, until now. Until we have met you. You could take them by surprise."
Stefan continued, "Cut their throats, while they rot atop their thrones. They won't even notice."
"I'm not going back there." I turned around to face them, still vigorously brushing my teeth. They really expected me to kill Aro? I could hardly kill a baby vamp.
"Not for long. Just enough time for them to become comfortable."
Vladimir spoke up, "let them trust you."
"Focus on growing your powers." Stefan advised.
"How long is not long for you? You've been alive for how many thousand years? Our terms of long are different."
"Ehh, a couple years?"
"Maybe ten?"
"No," I said defensively. Putting my tooth brush aside. "Besides, I can't just go back in there, Aro can read my mind."
"Don't let him." Vladimir said in a matter of fact voice.
"Not that simple."
"It is if you want it to be." Stefan walked over to the window, looking out. "You've showed us these last two weeks that your abilities are quite capable of undertaking this task. I trust that you'll be succesful. But I've suspected that we've had a tail following us for the last couple days now, and it appears he has decided to show up. It's best if they find you alone. We should be off, Vladimir."
"Goodbye little one. We'll send word when the time comes. Lay low till then."
"You can't just leave me--" But with a swoosh of wind and the slamming of the bathroom door, they were gone. I spit the rest of the mint out and took a gulp of water before looking out the window to see who the tail was they were talking about. I had stopped worrying about being tracked once I had joined forces with them. It didn't seem so necessary while I had them, I had been tired of wasting away on the streets alone, and if I had two men to protect me, then I didn't need to be afraid if someone found me. But now they were gone, and I was caught.
I couldn't see anyone out the window though, but I could hear his breathing from a block away. It was accompanied by a limp step and no heart beat. Coming closer and closer. I slipped out the window, and scrambled up to the rooftop. The trees were in the way. But I could smell his scent on the wind.
