The Girl
I am three months old right now, but Daddy says I look older. He says I grow fast. Daddy pays a lot of attention to me, and worries so much he spoils me rotten. At this very moment I am sitting on top of a dumpster, in a back alleyway, eating a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone. Daddy is drinking a lady that I lured here with my cute baby face, just like he taught me. We've been travelling the world, a "world tour" he calls it. He usually gives me piggy back rides everywhere, but he told me that soon I'll have to start running on my own, not because I'm too big to be carried, he just wants to make sure that if we ever get separated I won't get hurt, and I'll be able to run away from bad people.
He says there's a lot of bad people.
I'm not sure I fully understand, but I think we're running away from something, because we always have to leave right when we get somewhere, and we never hang around other people. It only made sense that we were running away from something. I just didn't know what.
Daddy had finished his human, and was wiping his mouth as he got up. "Are you sure you don't want anything else? There's not a lot of people in the ocean and we won't take any detours if you get hungry," he warned, but I knew it was an empty threat.
"I already drank today, I'm full," I said trying to fit the rest of the ice cream into my mouth. It was really cold against my teeth.
Daddy shook his head at me, "You're going to choke."
"Nu-uh," I gurgled, my head turned up trying to keep the ice cream from falling out of my mouth, there was too much, and it was too cold to close my mouth.
"Well, come on, Cupcake, time to go. Someone had to have seen this lady following you."
My head still turned up, I scooted off the dumpster and jumped down. Some ice cream dripped out of my mouth, enough to be able to close my mouth despite the coldness of it. I followed Daddy to the end of the ally where it looked out into the street. It was the dead of night, but cars were zooming past nonetheless, so instead of walking in the street, Daddy hoisted me onto his back and started climbing up the wall of a building. When we got to the top, Daddy started running and jumping across the roof tops and our journey continued.

We were sitting on a bench in the shade of an oak tree, it was late afternoon, and a bunch of children were playing on the playground. The reason we weren't on the run at the moment was because we somehow got trapped by the sun, threatening to send daddy's skin into a cascade of sparkles that would give us away. And there were way to many people here to get away with that.
We've been here for about an hour and I was having trouble sitting in one place for so long. "Daddy, does my skin look like diamonds too?"
Daddy thought for a moment, then answered, "I'm not sure, now's not the time to figure that out though. right now we have to lay low."
"But I wanna play," I whined looking over at the other children laughing and running around. It wasn't fair.
"Not now, pumpkin. Just lay low."
"But--"
"Not now."
And that was that, there was no way to win once he made up his mind. But just then, a lady holding the hand of a little girl started walking over. The little girl looked about my age. Probably a little older. I watched with ease as they approached us, but Daddy stiffened. He wasn't used to being around humans without eating them. I myself thought they were tasty, but my throat didn't burn like he told me his did. I just liked the taste, and I needed the energy, but I'm sure if I really tried, I could go on an all human food diet without trouble--not that I wanted to though.
When they came up to us the woman introduced herself as Linda, and that her daughter was really shy, but wanted to play with me. Her daughters name was Marissa. When they asked us, Daddy didn't answer, he was trying to keep from ripping their heads off. I could tell he was putting in a good effort too, and I was glad because now I might be able to make a friend, but when I started to answer, I stopped myself. What was my name?
I looked at my Daddy, all I had to do was see his face and know he was contemplating killing everyone in the park. He wasn't much for self control. "Daddy?" I asked, he looked at me, and I wished with all my heart, "Don't eat them."
Daddy somehow forced himself to respond. He quickly got up, pulling me along with him by my hand, narrowly dodging the sunlight by walking under trees, and being covered in a big coat. I looked back, sadness welling in my eyes. The mom and daughter were just standing there awestruck at the awkwardness of this scene. If only things were different, maybe we could have been friends.
Daddy stole an umbrella someone had by a picnic table, and opened it up over us, walking out of the safety of the tree's and onto the path where sunlight made everything glow bright and happy. Out of curiosity, I stuck my hand out of under the umbrella just to see what would happen. It shimmered slightly, but not as much as Daddy's would have. I just left it there watching it sparkle as we walked along. No one noticed.
That night, as Daddy held me so I could sleep as he ran, I looked up at his face, and asked, "What's my name?" I yawned right afterwards.
He looked down at me with pity in his eyes, that quickly disappeared, "Whatever you want it to be, Munchkin, you can choose."
I nodded, "I'll think about it," and snuggled into his cold chest, away from the cold air that surrounded me. Tomorrow he was going to teach me to swim. I hoped I could learn quickly because he told me he wouldn't wait for me if I fell behind. I didn't worry though, it was probably just another empty threat.
