Today was my off day. During my off days, this was usually my time to shop for groceries, buy baby supplies such as diapers, formula and other things needed. I quickly but surely checked the straps to my kangaroo pouch on my body making sure it was safe and buckled for Lilly. I had a stroller but it was always a hassle pushing it, especially if you need to push a cart around the grocery store as well. Before placing Lilly in the pouch I made sure she was bundled up in a thick fuzzy sweater. Even though it's the fall the cold breeze did have its toll. I then slowly slipped her in making sure one more time that she was secure. I slipped on my fall jacket and collected my keys and purse before leaving the shelter and locking the shed.
As I was walking out the alley I made sure no one I knew was near by. When I notice that the coast was clear I merged in with the other people walking down the street. Like I said no one can know about my situation. As I was walking down the street I heard a car honk. I did not bother looking up cause I knew it would probably be some idiot trying to get attention but the car rolled up right beside me. I quickly wrapped my arms around my baby protecting her by the unexpected but as the voice called my name I knew that it was safe.
"Gabi! Hey is that you?" Jennifer called out.
"Hey Jen! Sorry I thought you were some creep", I replied giggling a bit.
"Oh my god, sorry if I scared you" Jennifer giggled. "I just finished my shift at the cafe and I saw you randomly walking so I thought you would like a ride" she continued.
"Oh, you don't have to honestly", I said.
"No its okay! I really don't mind. I have nothing to do right now but go home to an empty apartment, where are you heading?" She asked.
"I was just heading to the grocery store, I need to grab a few things", I replied.
"Hope on in! I will give you and princess a lift", She said thoughtfully.
"Are you sure? I don't want to keep you from studying or anything?", I stated.
"It's fine honestly, it's on the way anyways", She smiled.
"Okay, thanks! I have to sit in the back though, is that alright?", I stated.
"Yup! No problem, hop on in!", She excitedly.I slowly got in making sure my seatbelt was on and that my baby was comfy as possible.
"So how was the cafe today?", I asked.
"You know the usual", She replied back.
"Thats good, what are you in school for again?", I asked.
"Social Worker", She answered.
"Thats nice", I sated.
"Do you mind if I ask you something?", She asked.
"Sure go ahead", I replied.
"I remember you telling me you were suppose to go to school until this precious princess happened but what were you going to take?", she asked.
"Law", I said.
"Wow, you my girl must have the brains", she said with a smile.I smiled back in response.
"Is there anyone in your family that does it?", She continued.
"Yea, my mom", I replied quietly.
"Thats cool! Like mother like daughter", she said.I sat there quietly, not knowing what to say.
"I am sorry! I didn't mean to upset you", she said feeling embarrassed.
"No it's okay, my mom and I aren't exactly in good terms", I replied.
"Aw, I am sorry to hear that", She said.
"It's okay honestly", I stated. She parked the car in front of the store then looked back towards me putting a hand on my knee.
"Hey, if you need anything. Don't hesitate to contact me alright?", She said.
"Thanks for this Jennifer", I replied back.
"No problem!", She smiled.I quickly got out securing Lilly's head from hitting the roof of the car with my hand while the other one held my purse. She honked one last time before leaving and I waved back before entering the store.
An Hour Later......
I walked out with three grocery plastic bags filled with the supplies I needed. I decided to take a taxi home because carrying three bags with a baby attached to you was a struggle. I usually tell the taxi driver to drop me off at the convenient store that was right outside the alley, once I see him drive off thats when I would make my way home. Once I got inside I quickly heated up a bottle knowing my baby was getting hungry.
As I watched her eat contently I thought about the future and how I was going to raise my little girl. I wanted everything for her even if I had to sacrifice shifts to get her what she wanted. Thats when I noticed the tears running down my face.
Flashback...
"Mom, I can explain!", I said as tears slowly dripped down my face
"I can't believe this!!!", she yelled.
I couldn't think straight at all."How are you supposed to continue college?! Because I sure in hell wont take care of that baby", she yelled.
"Mom please!", I pleaded.
"You know the only think I work for is you! I work so hard and this is how you repay me?! By getting pregnant?, she said furiously.
"Does he even know Gabi?!!, she asked with anger.I shook me head.
"Well thats just great!", She replied back pissed.
"I cant ruin his career, he just got scouted to be in the NBA, he is starting his dream. I can't do that to him", I stated.
"Well what about you Gabi?! What about your dream?!", she asked.I didn't know what to say.
"How are you going to support that child?! Tell me?", she asked before walking out of the room furiously.
End of Flash back
I couldn't help but cry as I stoked my baby girl's face. That memory was the day I knew what I had to do. I was going to make sure I dedicate my whole life to her, protect her, make sure she is loved every single day, but most importantly make her smile and laugh because she deserves to be happy no matter how tough our lives will get. I want her to know no matter what, it will be mommy and princess taking on the world, just the both of us.
