Brayden
***
So, playing basketball with my 15 year old sister is NOT my definition of fun. Not including the fact that I'm not in the least bit athletic. All of my skills are in my academics.
"Okay Brayden. So, the basics of basketball are simple: Don't let me get this ball into that hoop," Olive said, gesturing to the ball and the hoop.
I barely even heard her because I was thinking about how lucky my twin brother was. He got to study while I had to play this stupid sport. Talk about major role reversal!!
"Brayden?!" Olive said, snapping her fingers in front of my face, almost hitting my glasses.
"What?" I asked.
"Focus, I've got a big game on Monday and I need to practice!" she snapped.
"Okay, okay. Fine. Let's just get this over with," I said.
Once she scored her first basket, it was pretty much downhill from there. I scored maybe two baskets while she scored like fifteen. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but it was a lot.
"I'm gonna go inside now," she said after awhile, "you're not good and this is too easy. I'll just wait for dad to get home."
With that, she walked inside spinning the basketball on her finger.
As I was walking inside, my phone buzzed. It was Hattie, my amazing girlfriend.
Hey babe, I've been thinking.
Uh oh, that's never good!
:( rude
Oh, I'm sorry. What have you been thinking about?
We haven't gone on a date in awhile, so why don't we, tonight?
Sure, I'd be up for that. What do you wanna do?
How about a movie, say 'The Fault in Our Stars?'
Wait? Aren't you a genius? Why would you wanna see something so sad?
Yes I'm a genius, but I also have FEELINGS! And how do you know it's sad?
Oh, um, I heard it from, a friend....
Brayden Alexander Maddox, you read the book didn't you?
Whaaaaaaaaat? Nooooooooo, I just heard it from Olive.
Uh huh, right. Anyways, are we on for tonight?
Totally, just let me tell my mom. She totally chewed Owen out earlier for hanging out with Carly without her permission. It was hilarious.
I bet, so I'll see you at 4:30?
Sure, see you then <3
<3
"Brayden!" was all I heard before running smack into the door.
"Ugh, my nose," I grunted.
"Oh my gosh, Brayden honey, are you okay?" mom yelled frantically from the kitchen. She walked out on the porch to check my nose. It was throbbing pretty bad and it probably looked worse than it actually was.
"Ew, your nose is all red and purple," Olive said when she came outside.
"Ugh, and I have a date with Hattie tonight! What am I going to do?" I practically yelled.
"Brayden, just calm down. Everything will be fine for your date. When is it?" mom asked.
"4:30."
"Well, it's about 1 now," mom said checking her watch, "we have time to go to the emergency room and have the doctors check it out."
"Uh, I don't really think that's necessary," I said back shakily. If there was one thing I was afraid of, it was doctors. Now, I know what you're thinking: The nerd is afraid of doctors, that's a very unjustified fear. But you're wrong. Ever since I was a little kid, I've been scared of doctors. I don't really know why, I just am.
"Brayden, you're gonna have to get over your fear of doctors. This nose looks serious," mom said, lightly patting my nose in various places.
"Ouch," I winced. "Fine, let's go then."
"Owen, I'm taking Brayden to the emergency room. We should be back in less than an hour," mom yelled as we walked inside.
"Why does he have to go to the emergency room?" Owen asked walking downstairs. "Oh, what happened to your nose?"
"He ran into the door," Olive answered for me, "it was hilarious!"
"Olive! Apologize!" mom scolded.
"Fine, sorry Brayden," she said reluctantly.
"Can I come?" Owen asked.
"Sure. Olive do you wanna come?" mom asked.
"Sure, I have nothing better to do," she shrugged.
With that, we all go into the car and set out for the Overton Medical Center emergency room. I texted Hattie to let her know what was going on.
What else could go wrong today?
