Chapter one

'Toni, get down here!' my mom literally screamed up the stairs, i mean really what is it with Nigerian parents and shouting. With all the times I've been screamed at i'm surprised im not deaf. I shut down my laptop unwillingly and started putting my ugg boots on, London is really cold in the winter and im not risking two weeks sat in bed with mum. No way.

'Oluwatoni Bode! if you don't come down here right now im going to take away that computer of yours.'

'One sec mom' i replied and charged down the stairs. There's no way on earth i'm gonna let her have that laptop.

'Hey, you called me' i said, staring at her waiting for orders.

'Toni if you keep giving me that stupid attitude, its the next plane to Nigeria for you, I've been speaking to your aunty, she's helping me look for a nice boarding school for you, i'd rather pay for you over there than have you waste here' she tossed a bunch of vegetables into a pan. I grabbed a knife and started chopping up onions.

'I'm not giving you any attitude, you just assume i am but thats the way i talk'

'Thats not the way you talked when you came here nine years ago!'

'Nine years ago i was eight! it is a long time ago you know!'

She looked at me and sighed 'We need to finish this before your father gets home, he wont be happy.' I just rolled my eyes to her back and carried on with my onions, she can really frustrate me sometimes.

Two hours later we; me, mom and dad were sat around the table eating, I was actually pretty proud of myself; mom always goes on like i cant cook any nigerian food but here we were eating vegetable soup and rice which i cooked (well some of it anyway). I rushed my food wanting to get back upstairs as soon as possible, mom looked like she was about to start another conversation about my attitude which i definitely did NOT want to have.

'Toni!' My dad laughed at me as he drank his water 'If you dont slow down with that food, you'll choke!'

' HA HA HA dad' i replied sarcastically, my mom stared at me as i did this.

'Back in Nigeria' she said as she glared at me and my dad 'You would have been smacked so hard for that, you don't speak to your elders like that'

'You dont get it do you' i said, trying to mask my frustration and anger. 'We're not in Nigeria! I dont act that way! Never have and probably never will! This is me, Take it or leave it!' My mom's facial expression changed so fast, her eyes burning with fury.

'Bayo, talk to your daughter! I will not have her speak to me like that, especially in my own house! I can't beleive you would just let her talk like that! With no respect...' I took my chance and legged it up the stairs grabbing a bottle of coke and some kitkats from the fridge, i sensed a long argument coming.
