Chapter 7
“White lips, pale face. Breathing in snowflakes, burnt lungs, sour taste. Light's gone, day's end, struggling to pay rent. Long nights, strange men. And they say, She's in the Class A Team, Stuck in her daydream. Been this way since 18 but lately her face seems, Slowly sinking, wasting, crumbling like pastries. And they scream, the worst things in life come free to us….” I stopped midway through my song a little annoyed at being disturbed from Ed Sheeran’s sexy voice. I picked up my phone with Katy’s Perry’s hit ringing out from it. I smiled as I read Keisha’s text.

I chuckled, Keisha and her weird mood swings, I wasn’t replying her cuz I really didn’t want to explain everything that had happened in the last two hours. I couldn’t even get over it myself! It’s been two days seen I met Matthew and I’d sort of given up hope of him ever calling me, It’s not like I could have ever been a proper girlfriend to him anyway with mum and dad and church...
But then last night, he called me!! He actually called me! Here’s how the conversation went:
Me: (answering my phone without checking the caller I.D ‘cause I’m stupid like that) Hello?
Him: Hey Toni, Its Matthew.
Me: (Chokes for a bit) Ma..ma.tth..ew (Continues choking)
Him: Y..yeahh, you okay?
Me: (Regaining composure)Yeahh I’m fine. Hey
Him: (Laughing) Hi, I was just wondering if you wanted too grab coffee sometime?
Me: (I HATE COFFEE) Yeahh yeahh sure.
Him: ‘Kay, I’ll text you the details
Me: Alright, Bye
Him: See ya.
Awful right? I acted like a complete Retard He probably thinks I’m some socially awkward dumb-ass. Oh my God! Dumbass? Now I was a socially awkward American Dumbass. I sighed to myself, jumping of my bed and heading towards the door before I tripped over my phone charger and fell flat on my face. God! Make that a clumsy, Socially awkward, American dumb-ass. I sighed again and headed down the stairs, dad was home and I wanted to go greet him before my mum said I was being rude.
“Hey daddy!” I said putting my arms around his neck and swinging myself into his lap. So what? I was a daddy’s girl.
“Hello princess” He replied smiling down at me.
“Daddy we need to pick out a Christmas tree you know, all the good ones will go soon”
“Yeah, I know. We’ll go on sunday after church”
“But what if mum doesn’t want to go?” I said worriedly.
“Well then, She can go home herself” I laughed at this cuz he knew mum didn’t like driving on her own. The woman’s got serious issues.
“Okay, so… whatamigettingforchristmas?” I asked hurriedly, hoping he’d reply without thinking and let out the secret.
“Hahaha! Now that I’m not telling you!” He said tapping his nose slowly
“You’re mean!” I said in a mock whiny voice.
“Only to you baby girl!” He laughed back.
“So what d’you say to us helping your mother in the kitchen?’ His eyebrows went up as he said this giving him a mischievous grin.
“She’ll only get wound up! And then she’d go mental that we wasted her specially imported egusi!” (One of the few Nigerian foods I can actually pronounce)
“Exactly” He replied with a laugh. Swinging me off his laps and onto his back as we headed into the Kitchen to be faced with a very angry African woman.

Picture on the side is of Toni as a baby played by Taylor Dior :) basically the title is implying she and her dad are their own team.
