Chapter 9.
“Hey beautiful!” Keisha said as she opened her door too me.
“Hiya!” I answered back as I made my way too her kitchen, her fridge always has the best snacks and I was in the mood for some food therapy. “Guess who I saw on the way here? Five seven and rhymes with bank”
“Erwww! Cassandra, the skank, What did she want?”
“Apparently, she lives across the street from Matthew. He’s just moved in and she’s been trying it on him.” Keisha laughed at this.
“Like he’d ever go out with her, the airhead. What do boys even see in her anyway? Her hair’s too fucking shiny and her tits are about as big as her brain” I smiled at that, We both knew those were lies, Cassandra; as much as I hate to admit, is gorgeous. Not drop dead beautiful but pretty nonetheless. She may be flat chested but she made up for it in looks. “So did she say anything else?”
Then I proceeded to tell Keisha everything that had happened, right from her dissing Africa too my phone call with Matthew.
“She what?!” Keisha interrupted
“I'm not making it up you know. She DID say it”
“I know! I know!” she shouted back, Keisha had always hated Cassandra right from high school till the present moment. Cassandra had done something to her big brother; she wouldn’t tell me what and I knew better than to ask. “Didn’t she learn her lesson in high school? We can’t let her mess with us again Toni! We need to do something!”
“Yeah, I know. But college doesn’t start till next week so we probably won’t see her till then.” As if it wasn’t enough that we had to spend 5 years of high school with her; she had picked the same college as Keisha and I. So guess who’s stuck with her for another two years?
“Arhggghhh!” Keisha groaned in frustration. I think I should be more angry in this situation but I didn’t dare mention anything.
“It’s alright Keesh; we’ll get her back when we get in school. No biggie!” I said in hopes too get off this topic. I might hate Cassandra but that’s doesn’t mean I want to talk about her twenty four seven.
“Oh, alright then.” She sighed. I smiled happily inside as I munched on a piece of plantain I had taken from the fridge. Nearly as good as mum’s! I thought too myself. Though my moment of happiness didn’t last long as Keisha then asked about mine and Matthew’s date. I was itching to tell her but I didn’t want to sound so lovestruck and silly.
“…well, we talked.”
“You talked?!” she interrupted. “Is that it?”
“No! You didn’t even let me finish!”
“Alright then, carry on.” She said and then I told her everything that had gone on; slightly exaggerating me falling on my bum and how cringey it was. She was soooo guilty, God, I loved my best friend.
It was Christmas eve and in a couple of days we’d be back in school. I was sat on the couch, in my trackie bottoms and minnie mouse jumper, lazily flicking through the channels. I settled on E! where a very interesting episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians was going on. I snuggled in even deeper into my duvet, which I’d brought from upstairs and settled down too watch it in peace. I wish.
“Oluwatoni! I thought I told you to stop watching all this celebrity gossip nonsense!” My mum said. Well she didn’t say it per say. More like shouted, Its not her fault really; she just doesn’t have an inside voice.
“It’s not celebrity nonsense mum.” I replied shifting my weight and gathering up my duvet so she’d have room to sit. This woman has issues man, there are three other sofas she could choose to sit in but she had too choose mine!
“Well whatever it is, I don’t want you watching it.” She replied, picking up the remote and switching the channels to Nollywood. “If you’re not going too make yourself useful, why don’t you go upstairs and clean up your room. Nimi’ll be staying with you.” Oh god. Why me? What have I ever done to deserve this kind of punishment? I already knew my cousins were coming to stay for Christmas, mum had been counting down to their arrival all day, but I didn’t know I’d have to room with one of them.
I know they’re family and you’re meant too love family and I do. I mean I’d cry if one of them got hit by a bus or something; but they’re just so fucking annoying. I don’t know why they just can’t stay in the guest rooms. There’s two of them; surely two rooms is more than enough for a family of four. There’s my aunt and uncle, who can share one room easy peasy! Then there’s Nimi and her twin sister Temi who can also share one room, I honestly don’t see why I have to give up MY room!
Especially to Nimi, she just gets on my nerves. I’m sure I wasn’t that annoying when I was thirteen. I sighed to myself, gathered my duvet then headed upstairs. When I got to my room I sighed again, It was a tip. It was a pretty big room so the dirt and clothes were spread out more but it was still a tip.
Our house was one of the biggest in out neighbourhood; with mom and dad being doctors and pretty successful ones at that. My room was the second biggest upstairs, the first being mom and dad’s. I had begged mum to let me get it redecorated for my sixteenth birthday. I really didn’t want any of my friends coming into the hello kitty shrine that I called a room.
It now had coral pink walls, with white framed butterfly mirrors hanging randomly around the room. There was big white wardrobe with butterfly handles and a dresser too match. My bed was my favourite thing in my room; It was king sized, big white and wooden. I loved my headboard, it reminded me of cake with coral rimmed white metal butterflies weaving in and out of the wooden bars behind it. I had always wanted to paint some coral flowers on the bars but I never really got a chance.
The only thing that really looked out of place was the Hello Kitty Duvet I had wrapped around me. Okay, I lied. Mum hadn’t made me keep it, I wanted to keep it for myself. It was just so comfy. Although she was a bit surprised that I had wanted to keep something that smelt like urine. I assured her it didn’t even though it slightly did. Whose urine? I don’t know. I padded over to my desk, It’s also white if you’re guessing. I turned on my Macbook air, yet another present from mum and dad for my birthday. I am pretty spoiled I guess.
I turned on google chrome and immediately logged into facebook. One new friend request. It was from Matthew. My heart skipped a beat as I clicked on his profile and accepted it. In his profile picture, It was him and a couple of guys who I suppose were his friends. They looked like they were on a night out, I clicked next and continued to look. Call me a perv all you want, but that boy is fineeeeeeeeeee.
