Authors Note
This is my first story on wattpad. I hope that you like it. If you do, please let others know, so that they might read it too. Also, I have tried to write several books before, and I always ended up stopping within about ten pages because of a lack of motivation. If you like it, then please let me know, as it will encourage me to continue if others like it. I will also accept constructive criticism, general comments, spelling / grammar corrections, etc.
I got the concept of the book (which will hopefully become a series) from the anime show / light novel series Sword Art Online. Although the basic premise of the story will be similar, I will try to make everything else completely different. (if possible)
I am personally excited about this story and hope you are too. Have fun reading!
Prologue
A light breeze drifted across the bedroom as the door was opened. The boy halted at the unexpected breeze, relaxing again as he determined the source of the wind: the open window on the other side of his room.
I seriously need to stop being so tense, especially in my own house, he thought to himself.
What am I expecting, that I will get attacked by monsters!? he asked himself facetiously, a small grin tugging at the corners of his lips. He paused for a moment to decide whether he should close the window, then decided against it, as it was a beautiful spring day outside, and the fresh air would make this already great day all the more enjoyable. Unable to contain his excitement any longer, he rushed over to his bed and picked up a black helmet with a translucent black visor, sitting on the side of his bed and quivering with anticipation.
Still chuckling at his overreaction to the spring breeze, he took a small card and slid it into the slot located on the part of the helmet that would soon cover his forehead, and then pressed the power button located directly above the newly filled game card slot.
As the power button flashed twice before becoming a solid green color, the boy’s thoughts bounced around his head like debris thrown by a tornado. I can’t believe that it is finally out – the world’s first virtual reality game! I have always been a fan of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, (MMORPGs, more commonly referred to as MMOs) but I’m sure that this game will top all of the previous games I have played – a Virtual Reality MMO, (VRMMO) which means that I will feel like I am actually fighting monsters and saving the world from destruction! There were only 25,000 copies of the game sold, and I am so lucky that I was able to get one! (I waited in line for so long, yet barely managed to get the fourth-to-last copy in the store). I am so excited! I have waited so long, and now I can finally play a virtual reality game!
As his thoughts ended as quickly and abruptly as they had begun, he had already put on the snugly fitting helmet, attached the chin strap, and laid down on his back on the mattress, grinning like a six-year-old on Christmas Day. He then pressed the button on the side of his helmet, then waited, his green-gold eyes shining in anticipation.
Suddenly, his vision turned completely black. A second later, he felt himself falling through an undefined space, a myriad of colors seeming to surround him in an almost cylindrical shape.
The colors abruptly vanished, leaving nothing but pure darkness. As he seemed to come to a stop, feeling as though he were floating in midair, a glowing blue screen somewhat resembling a computer monitor appeared suspended in the blackness, while a touchscreen that was to be used as a keyboard came into existence below it, glowing with the same sky-blue light. Displayed on the “screen” were the words ENTER NAME, and below it was a rectangular box where the name chosen would be typed. The teenage boy hesitated for a second before typing a name into the touchscreen and tapping enter. A new window quickly popped up in front of the old one. In bold, bright red lettering, it stated, ACCEPT PLAYER NAME [NADRAN]? ONCE CHOSEN, YOUR NAME CANNOT BE CHANGED. Smiling slightly, he tapped the OK button.
The darkness faded, bright color instantly replacing the blackness of before, and the boy gasped in wonder at the scene before him. A deep voice grandly announced to all the new inhabitants of this virtual fantasy world in a voice that seemed to come from all directions at once, “Welcome… to Age of Dragons Online!”
Back in the boy’s bedroom, a beautiful butterfly slowly flew in through the open window, drifting past the teenager’s form, who, aside from the helmet covering his head, seemed merely to be sleeping as his mind danced in a fantastical realm. The delicate blue-and-orange butterfly continued onward across his room, and fluttered toward a sweet-smelling scented candle that had come for free with the Age of Dragons Online (ADO) game box. It flew closer to the gently flickering flame, entranced by the sweet smell of the candle, but got too close to the flame, and caught fire. It frantically tried to escape, desperately flapping away from the source of its doom, but it was too late. The butterfly was consumed by the flames, burning brightly for a second, then falling to the ground, now a lifeless pile of ash where once had existed an enchantingly beautiful butterfly.
