Chapter 9

First Boss

Nadran groaned and opened his eyes.  He tried to sit up, then realized he couldn’t move.  He looked around as much as he could, but all he could see were huge chunks of rocks inches above his face.  He was lying on his back, and from his chest down, he was being pinned down by huge rocks.  There was a small space free of rocks above his face, which he was thankful for, but he could only move his head.  That’s right… the wall fell on top of me.  So currently, my whole body is trapped under a huge pile of rocks.  When that happened, did I lose consciousness?  He again tried to move his body, but to no avail.

That was when the pain hit.  Nadran let out a strangled gasp as his body let him know where he was hurt… which was pretty much everywhere.  I feel like I have repeatedly been thrown against a brick wall (not that I know from experience, but this how I think it would feel)… and that is WITH the game’s pain absorbers!  If this had happened in real life, I can’t even imagine how much this would hurt.  Surprisingly, the place that hurt most was his chest, where he had been punched by Golkav.  Apparently, his punches hurt more than slamming your back against a wall at thirty miles per hour or being crushed by a thousand pounds of falling rubble.  He must be pretty powerful.

As Nadran lay there, his mind was racing.  I need to help everyone fight off the monsters.  I don’t want anyone else to die!  Nadran struggled again, but the rocks didn’t even budge.  He began to feel lightheaded; the small air pocket around his head was apparently sealed off from the outside, and it was running out of oxygen.  Volzan really did think of everything, Nadran thought, even down to oxygen content in the air running out and the accompanying side effects… come on, this isn’t any time to be impressed!  I need to find a way out!  It would be really sad if, after all this, I died of suffocation!  I can’t die like this!  I NEED TO GET OUT!!

Suddenly, he felt energy sweep through him like a switch was flipped, releasing energy from… somewhere.  Without knowing quite what he was doing, he instinctively gathered all of the energy into his center, not quite sure even how he was doing it, and released it.

With the force of an explosion, the rocks were launched away from him, flying outwards in all directions, and started raining down, crushing everything in a twenty foot radius, and leaving a three foot radius circle around him free from any rocks.  Luckily, there was nobody near enough to get hit.  In fact, Nadran realized as he got up, pain forgotten, he didn’t see anyone.  Where are they?  They’re not… dead, are they?

Aside from that, what was that?  Did I cause that explosion?  He looked at his hands and thought that he saw a flash of black, but it vanished before he could focus on it.  The strange burst of energy within him had disappeared, as well.  Before he could think about it further, he heard sounds of battle coming from the main building that took up most of the castle.  Nadran immediately ran toward it, unsheathing his swords, ready to help fight.

The main building was a large structure, about forty feet tall, and took up most of the castle.  The only other structures were fifty foot tall towers at the four corners of the castle.  On top of the main building was a main tower which was sixty feet tall from the top of the main building.  What the point of having a tower that reached one hundred feet off the ground, Nadran didn’t know, but a battle was raging in it.  Right before he stepped into the main building, he saw a huge explosion blow a large hole in the side of the tower, launching chunks of rocks outward, sailing through the air until they collided with the outer wall.  Nadran dodged a small rock that almost hit him, then ran inside.
