Chapter 20

Tactics

As they left the hospital, Aledro spoke up. "You know, our group is starting to get pretty big. I think we need some way to communicate with each other when we get split up or are far apart. There's got to be some sort of communication device we can buy in this town, so we can keep in touch."

"That sounds like a good idea," Nadran agreed. "You can meet us by the forest to the north of town. I'd rather not stay in the middle of all these players if I can help it."

"Wait! But-" Aledro protested in surprise. "I never volunteered to go get them myself! I was just saying that we-"

"See you in a bit," Nadran said, laughing along with Lunalia and Korath.

"Hey!" Aledro called out as they walked away, leaving Aledro to find the devices.

"You know, now that I think of it, I think that conversation was a little too loud," Lunalia murmured as they walked toward the treeline.

"Oh yeah, you're right," Nadran replied, glancing around. "Oops."

"It was pretty funny, though," she said, smiling.

"That it was," Nadran agreed, and they both laughed (though quieter than they had before).

Korath looked like he was about to say something, but Lunalia cut him off. "No talking. I already don't like you for blackmailing us and most definitely don't trust you, so I don't want you saying anything for now."

Nadran raised his eyebrows at this, but Lunalia just shrugged and told him "I know what I said. I just don't want to hear his voice so that I don't get mad and rip his head off."

Korath looked over Lunalia's shoulder at Nadran with a "What have I gotten myself into?" expression on his face. Nadran just smiled. You're the one who forced themselves into our group. You have no room to complain about the sanity of our group. Besides, aren't you really reckless anyways?

Korath read Nadran's expression and sighed, apparently giving up. He leaned against a tree and relaxed, waiting for Aledro's return. Nadran sat down, and Lunalia paced back and forth at the forest's edge. I forgot how scary she can be when she's in a bad mood, Nadran thought, watching Lunalia slightly warily.

A little later, Aledro returned, holding a small bag in his hand. "Hope these are worth it," he grumbled, handing the devices out. "These things weren't cheap."

"Thanks, Aledro" Nadran said, patting him on the back. "You're such a great friend."

"Yeah, sure," Aledro said, rolling his eyes.

The devices were small, and looked like wireless earpieces with microphones attached. "They're magically enchanted to connect to the other devices you sync them with," Aledro explained. "Whenever you talk, it picks it up and transfers your voice to the other headpieces. And remember that this is magic, not technology. There isn't too much advanced stuff tech-wise in this world, but magic can be used to recreate a lot of the modern amenities that we are used to in reality. Since it runs off magic, however, that means that things such as anti-magic fields will completely block out our communication."

"Thanks for the info," Nadran responded, and held out his device so it could sync. Everyone else did the same, so that the headsets were all almost touching each other, and they all beeped simultaneously, confirming the synchronization. As they all put their headsets on, Nadran looked around, trying to remember the direction they had been traveling.
