CHAPTER FIVE// YOU'VE BEEN GETTIN' AFTER IT

He looks at me with a pained expression, regret filling his eyes. "I never meant to hurt you."

"Yeah, no one ever seems to, but they do anyway," I say.

"Hey, that's different!"

"Wirklich? Wie denn?"

[Really? How?]

Grayson sighs and runs his fingers through his hair.

Around the age of 14...

"You're not coming?" I asked, tears filling my eyes.

She shook her head with a grim expression. "I'm sorry, Schatzi, but I can't come to your competition."

I nodded. "Okay."

"Is that fine?"

I nodded, the lie forming easily. "Yeah," I said, sniffling. "It's fine."

Her expression immediately lightened. "Ich liebe dich!" she said, as she turned and walked out the door.

[I love you!]

"Yeah, doesn't seem like it," I muttered, grabbing my duffel bag to text Aubrey.

Sie kommt nicht. –W

[She's not coming]

Tut mier leid! Sollte meine Mama dich ab hollen? –A

[I'm so sorry! Should my mom pick you up?]

Ja. –W

[Yes]

Just like always, I thought to myself. Someone always hurts me.

"And what makes it different? What makes you different?"

"It's different because— "

"Hey, Willow! Get in here!"

I sigh, looking at Grayson. "We're not done with this conversation."

He nodded his jaw taut before I pushed myself off the bench and went back into the treehouse. Everyone was gathered in the main area, and Aubrey was holding a box. I raised an eyebrow skeptically, my eyes flying towards Jaq. She just smiled and gestured towards the box Aubrey was holding.

"What is it?" I asked, approaching her.

"A present," she answered. She handed it to me before saying "Open it."

I took the box and sat down at the counter. The box was a small wooden one with cute engravings on it. I slide it open to reveal passes

"You got me indoor skydiving tickets?" I ask excitedly, looking to Aubrey.

"Yup, and I'm going with," she said, a smile on her face.

"And me, too!" Riley said. "But not that party-pooper," she said, wrinkling her nose at Landon.

"Sorry," he said, rolling his eyes. "I've got an anniversary to celebrate."

"You have a girlfriend?!" I asked, astonished.

"Yes, I do, happily for almost six years," he says, crossing his arms and sticking his tongue out.

"Umm, aren't you supposed to be 24 years old?"
