CHAPTER FOUR// I'M AN IMPATIENT HUMAN BEING

"Are you sure this isn't too casual?"

"Yes, I'm positive. I'm pretty sure that I'm the one who helped plan this," Jaq replied, to the same question that I've been asking since we bought the outfit.

"Okay, then I think I'm ready."

"Finally!"

"Shut up."

I double-checked my reflection. I was wearing the blue and white stripped dress that reached down to mid-thigh underneath my white leather jacket. I was wearing all white Adidas Superstars, which I convinced Jaq that I could buy on my own. My hair was natural, and I put on light makeup, keeping it natural.

We exited the bedroom and grabbed our essentials before we exited the house. The hideout was in the forest of our old house. There was a trail that lead up a hill where my parents built a treehouse when Jaq and I were kids.

I hummed to the music on the radio and checked my phone as we drove to the nearby neighborhood. My friend Alyssa back home texted me a photo of the after party I was missing out on, and I laughed. I loved partying, but I was happy that this would be low-key tonight. Or at least hoped for.

The drive was quick, and I entertained myself by looking out at the city. It grew smaller as we approached the suburb, and before we knew it, we were surrounded by houses and grocery stores and things of the sort.

Jaq parked the car at the start of the trail, and we got out and began out short trek.

"So who's there?" I asked, swinging my arms.

"You'll find out soon enough."

"Ugh. Why won't you just tell me?"

"Why can't you just wait?" Jaq asked, raising an eyebrow in challenge.

"Because I'm an impatient human being."

"That you are," she laughed.

I sighed and looked up. I was surprised to see that we were already there. It was well hidden in the trees. We pushed through some bushes and followed the worn path to the treehouse. The treehouse was lit up with lights, and there was a soft hum, most likely music playing. I walked across the grass and looked to Jaq. She nodded in encouragement, and I climbed up the ladder and into the treehouse. There weren't nearly as many people, only a handful of my closest friends.

Including Grayson...

But this time around, he isn't the first to greet me

Landon pulls me into a bone-crushing hug, knocking the air out of me. That seems to be happening a bit more than I would like, recently. He releases me, and I catch my breath before greeting Riley and Aubrey.
