I shove the body away, my hands instinctively lighting with fire. Then I notice it's Nathan. His face reflects the flicker of flame in my hands, his blue eyes staring at me. He looks shocked at first, but a little grin passes his lips as he pulls out a cookie.

"Oatmeal raisin. They're your favorite, right?"

"What?"

Didn't I just try to kill him? I take the cookie and stare at it, but it doesn't seem to go into my mouth. It just stays there, in my trembling hand.

Rose...

Screams of agony fill my ears. The ones of my victims.

Mommy, help!

Rose...

Help us!

Make it end!

ROSE!

At some point I realize that Nathan is yelling my name. My vision clears and I see that the cookie is crushed into crumbs in my hand.

"You okay? I lost you," Nathan murmurs.

"Y- yeah. I'm fine. Sorry," I reply. I avert my gaze awkwardly.

He wrinkles his nose. "How can you even see in this closet? I can barely make out your face in the dark."

"I have nocturnal vision. And that's not me, that's a mop," I reply. He's been talking to the mop for the past five minutes.

The sound of his laugh almost breaks my heart. How long has it been since I've heard a genuine one from him?

Just let it end.

"So..." Nathan starts awkwardly. "Any chance you're familiar with a psychopath waterbender?"

"That's Austin." I reply almost immediately.

"Oh. Well you might want to tell this Austin that beating the crap out of random civilians is looked down upon."

Hah, well, it wasn't very random. I just smile a little. "I'll say something to him."

Cradled in Nathan's arms, I sit in silence in the darkness with him. We don't talk, but just sit there. It doesn't take us long to doze off.

"NATHAN LEE!"

I groan. The shout makes us both groggily open our eyes.

"What!?" Nathan snaps.

"We've been looking for you two for hours!" Rowan protests.

"Well we're fine, you can leave us alone now," I snap, pressing my head against Nathan's chest a little deeper.

"You guys weren't doing that, we're you?" Rowan asks innocently.

I shoot a glare at him. "No! We were just talking and fell asleep."

Nathan shrugs. "Kissed a couple times."

"Not helping."

Gwen, who's seems to be always pissed off nowadays, clears her throat in all seriousness. "There's a war meeting. The general wants the Avatar to attend."

"Oh," I murmur. I stand up, brushing some dust off my pants.

"What about me?" Nathan stands up as well.

"You can come."

"No, he can't. He wasn't invited," Gwen says.

I smirk. "News flash, I'm the avatar. I'm the boss around here."

(Yes, there is a Percy Jackson reference in this chapter).
