I open the bathroom door and walk out very slowly, still in shock. I make my way to the living room where everyone looks up wide-eyed.
"Tiffany?" My mom walks over to me, a worried look on her face. "What's wrong? WHy are are you like this?"
"She doesn't feel too good." April says behind me.
I'm grateful for her help on trying to let the real reason come out, but I think it's time for me to stop hiding my feelings from everyone.
I walk and stand in front of Abby, who has made herself comfortable on the couch with Sophie on her side. "Get out." I say, my voice coming out groggy.
"Tiffany!" My mom gasps behind me.
"I said get out." I say again when Abby doesn't move from her spot.
Abby laughs, which gets me more mad. "What's wrong, Tiff? What did I do?"
"You know why you're here." I said pointing out the obvious to why she's only here to show off Sophie.
"Did you really think that Ron would stay with someone like you?"
"I did. I do." I say, confidently.
"Well, sweetie. Think again." Abby stands up and meets my height. "Because he wouldn't stay with someone like you."
"That's a lie."
"Oh, is it?" She laughs again. "He never loved you. All those promises he made were all broken way before he even thought of making them. That's why he proposed, because he never felt anything for you."
"You're wrong there." I say. "I know Ron and I know that there is something there."
"It's so amusing to watch you believe all the things he said to you sweety. But the truth is you're nothing but pure fun and amusement for him."
"What are you two talking about?" My mom asks.
"What's going on, Marisa, is that your daughter has been getting in the hands of an engaged man." Abby says.
"Tiffany?" My mom turns to me.
"I didn't he was engaged to someone." I say to my mom. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
"I'm sorry, but I'm confused?"
"Marisa, to make it easier to you." Abby says. "Tiffany has been acting as a skank on my son!"
"I'm sorry Abby, but I won't let you talk like that about my daughter." My mom walks to Abby. "So I would leave if I were you."
WIth that, Abby walks to the door followed by her future daughter-in-law. "Just tell your daughter to stay away from my son. Don't want a rat around him any longer."
I run upstairs to my bedroom after she leaves. I bury my face in my pillow as I let everything spill out. As much as I am in pain, most of it is rage and fury towards Abby. I know she would never approve, but the way she demonstrated tonight was the cruelest thing that was ever done. I felt humiliated and shattered. And the worst part of it was that I knew it was coming but I refuse to believe it.
"Tiffany." I feel my mom's hands on my back. "Can I be alone with my daughter April?"
I hear April say yes and the door closing.
I sit up and face my mom. To be honest, I thought she would be mad or disappointed, but to my surprise she's actually neither. "I'm sorry." I say. "I really wanted to tell you, but I couldn't because I Wanted to avoid everything that happened tonight."
"SInce when did this all happen?"
"Middle school." I say. "I thought that it would be better for no one to know because I knew that you wouldn't approve because of our age difference or something like that."
