The next day dragged on as usual. Science, history, english, Algebra, spanish, lunch. Ah lunch the time where everyone eats slop and talks to Tanner. I mean their friends, their friends. Tanner is a year older so the only time I see him is at lunch. The 40 minute period goes by quickly. Especially because I can't talk to him the whole time. I mean everyone would know that I like him and isn't that supposed to be something secret? After lunch there's band, my favorite class. Music always has helped me to relax. Ever since I began to play piano I realized that it was a great way to put all my negative energy into something beautiful and wonderful. When I began to learn the French horn this proved entirely true.
The next class is study hall then PE. Then the glorious last bell rings and I hurriedly change my clothes to meet Tanner before his football practice starts. He meets me by the weight room.
"Hey here's the jersey for tomorrow."
"Thanks. I hope I can make it fit."
"Nah don't worry you'll look great."
"Awe thank you."
"No problem... Well I should probably get going. Practice calls. But uhh I'll text you after?"
"Yeah okay. Sure." We both walk our opposite directions and into our own little worlds. I meet up with Kate and Lydia to walk home. Kate lives next door to us and is one of our best friends.
"Aye chica where were you?" Kate asks. Then she notices that I'm holding Tanner's jersey. "Oh my gosh Kameron!"
"What its just his jersey, chill out man!" I reply.
"But it's adorable Kam! Awe!" Lydia says.
"Can we please talk about something other than Tanner and I?" I ask.
"Can we talk about just Tanner or just you?" Kate asks.
"No!" I say giggling. We walk home talking about school that day and all our homework. Kate and I talk about homecoming on the condition that we don't talk about dates. When we get home I finish up my homework and start to help our dad make dinner. Around 5:30 I get a text from Tanner.
"Hey whacha doing?"
"Helping my dad cook what about you?"
"Not much after you're done eating do you wanna meet at the pond? The stars are gorgeous tonight city girl"
"Ok I'll text you when I'm done." He always teases about my cityness. In the city you can't see as many stars as you can out in the country. And in the country they're brilliantly lit you can even see the smallest specks of stars.
I run through my back yard to the small pond about 59 feet behind it where I see Tanner. We lay on our backs and just look at the stars. A breeze blows over us and I wish I would have worn something other than shorts and a tee shirt. He scoots closer and wraps his arm around me.
"They're beautiful" I say. He rolls onto his side and looks down at me. "What?" I ask.
"You say a star is beautiful. By that logic when I see you I don't see a star. I see the whole damn sky."
