Once we got to the clearing the Hunter's footsteps where very distinguishable through the trees as they ran toward us.
"They're coming! Get ready!" Brian yelled as we formed one single line around the clearing.
I told them about their plans to attack us and so we guarded from every angle. The Sentinals stayed hidden in the trees as a surprise attack. The Hunters wouldn't know what hit them. They're footsteps slowed as we waited for them. Like they wanted to make a surprise entrance.
"Well well well. It's the little werewolf army," Scar said loudly as they walked into the clearing.
No one from out side replied.
"The silent treatment...very effective. By now you know that we plan on getting rid of all of you. Making werewolves extinct forever. Rest assured....we will succeed," Scar said crossing his arms and getting in a defensive stance.
"That will never happen," I said loudly and with confidence.
"We shall see," Scar said with a sneer.
All us wolves growled fiercely and if I was on the other side of the growl I would be terrified. All of our growls together sounded horrible. But we didn't back down...it wasn't in our nature. I saw scar smirk and we all went running at each other.
I had my first target set in mind and so when I jumped I shifted into my wolf mid-air I easily tackled him to the ground. I ripped his throat out and it was a bloody mess. We were about three-fourth done with Scar's army and it was a blood bath. After I killed another man I lifted my head and howled for the signal for Dimirti and his army. That was a nice surprise that Scar wasn't ready for.
The whole time I was fighting I realized Scar and I were making our way closer to each other with every person we killed or hurt. And it was a lot. He mostly sliced once at them with his knife before moving on. No wolf attacked him twice. I was glad. He already had several visual injuries and they looked sort of bad. My fur was tinged red and I had several cuts on me but they healed quickly. I was doing pretty good until I got tackled by a Hunter I didn't see while I was killing someone.
The Hunter jumped on my back and stabbed my back left leg and my side. But luckily he missed any important organs. I didn't want to be dead before Scar was. I wanted him to die by my hands. I quickly tossed the Hunter off my back and snapped his neck. That's when over half of Scar's army were dead. There were about only twenty more of his men left. I didn't know how many of our people were dead or injured. I didn't have time to make a head count and find out. We were almost winning. I could still feel Alec in my mind so I knew he was still alive.
I felt a sharp pain in my front leg. There was an arrow stuck in it. To bad I was going to have to live with it. I located the guy who shot me and ran right at him. I jumped on him and clawed his chest to shreds then broke his neck. I turned and as soon as I did fire shot through my stomach.
I screamed as my body forced me to shift back into human form. I curled up on the ground holding the spot on my stomach where I was shot.
"Lia!" Derek yelled running over to me.
He picked me up and carried me away from everything and into the trees. I knew he was yelling for Alec but I couldn't really hear him. Everything was fuzzy.
"This is going to hurt. A lot. Just bear with me," Derek said and then I felt searing pain.
Derek was trying to pull the bullet out of my side. It hurt like hell, but it had to be done.
I heard a soft chuckle from across the clearing. I knew it was Scar, and he knew I could hear him.
"This is it my dear. I've finally defeated you. I might not have gotten rid of you all like I wanted, but at least you are dead," Scar said.
"I'm not dead yet," I whispered back to him; my voice raspy.
I knew Derek could hear Scar to, but he decided not to say anything.
"No not yet. But when you bleed out, I'll be happy that you're gone. It'll be one less werewolf I'll have to deal with," Scar said looking at me.
I turned my head and looked at everybody in the clearing. I saw Brian fighting off two Hunters and he took both of them down. Then he looked at me, sadness in his eyes. He knew what was about to happen. I saw Beck just take down a Hunter then he looked at me too. It was like everyone knew what was happening to me. Beck gave me a small smile and I smiled back. That's when Alec looked over. He was on the complete opposite side of the clearing. I was loosing to much blood and they knew it. This was it.
They way Alec looked at me said everything. He loved me, he loved me more than anything. He proved that every day we were together. Everything is going to change. This war will change us. We lost people today that we cant get back. It felt like it was all for nothing, but I know better. We freed ourselves. Not completely of course. We are never completely free. Maybe that's what he died for, to become completely free in the only way he knew how. I had always hoped I would die in a way that was noble or heroic. And in a way I did.
I finally saw Derek sitting beside me trying to keep pressure on my stomach. But the blood was still seeping out. I wasn't healing fast enough. I looked at Brian again and then I noticed Dimitri behind Scar. Dimitri looked at me and then whispered something in his ear. I heard it of course, everyone did.
"This is for her," Dimitri whispered to Scar.
Then he snapped Scar's neck. Everyone was silent. Alec walked over to me. He shakily kneeled down beside me and pulled my head into his lap. I saw several tears escape his eyes. I raised my hand and put it on his cheek. He leaned into my touch and closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry. I never got the chance to really be your mate. I never got the chance to show you how much I care," Alec said brushing a piece of hair out of my face.
I gave him a small smile, "You gave me enough." I told him.
Derek was just awkwardly sitting there, and I knew my time was up. He deserved some words. I looked at him and he smiled.
"Look after her. If you let her get hurt I will haunt you and cut off your balls, even as a ghost. You are a great friend," I said and then I took my last shaky breath...
I died for them: my mom, my dad, Alec, Rylee, Derek. I felt sorry for leaving them, but if this was the path that I was supposed to take, then it was.
