I straighten the black hat atop my head as my phone begins to play the instrumental version of Say Something.
I quickly slip half of my feet into the polished dress shoes that lay on the floor before me, as I hobble over to my bed.
Grabbing the piece of technology that flashed the name Emmy, I slide my finger towards the green phone icon.
'Logan, are you sure about this?' is the first thing I'm greeted with.
"Yes! Are you ready yet or not?" I sigh, annoyed.
"Yeah, but people are going to think we're weird. I mean, we're probably going to be the only ones there who are dressed up!"
She better not back out of this!
"Esmeralda, you were the one complaining about everyone thinking we were together! And so what if we're the only ones dressed up? People will have to believe us if we do this!" I swear, this girl needed a whole motivational speech to even consider doing something crazy.
With a reluctant sigh coming from the other end of the line, I knew that I had convinced her.
"I'll meet you at yours in-" I looked at the top right hand corner of my phone screen to find 8:23 PM written, "ten minutes."
"Yeah, whatever," she sighed yet again, "Just don't back out of this, ok?"
"Yeah, cause I'm the one who was doubting our plan."
"Whatever. See ya loser."
"See ya," I ended the phone call, before properly slipping my feet into my shoes and tying the laces.
Grabbing my car keys from my chest of drawers, I made my way downstairs, only to run into my mother.
She looked up from her bowl of Froot Loops to take in my outfit.
"Where are you headed off to? You have school!" She had the your-about-to-get-a-lecture look on her face.
"I am going to school, mum. I'm just dressing up for Halloween," I clarified before she wasted twenty minutes teaching me the importance of going to school everyday.
I walked into the pantry and grabbed an LCM bar before making my way back to my mum.
"Oh," she sounded almost surprised, "Well, you look handsome!"
Good save mum, good save.
"Thanks. Well, I have to go pick up Emmy now, so I love you and I'll see you after school," I placed a kiss on my mum's cheek before walking out the front door.
As I was closing the door, I heard a faint, "I love you too, Logan!"
I smiled as I closed the door behind me and continued down my porch steps.
I got into my car and turned on the radio before heading off to Emmy's house.
By the time I reached her house, four songs had passed, along with a bit of chatter from the radio hosts in between.
I honked the horn twice to signal that I was in front of her house and waiting.
I knew that she was going to take another two minutes to actually get in the car, so I took the time to make sure that my outfit was still in tact.
I looked to the passenger door when I heard it open and nodded my head in approval.
"Not too bad Esmeralda, not too bad."
"I would say the same to you, but unfortunately your face just ruins it all."
We have a lovely relationship.
I chuckled slightly before starting up the car again and following the path to school.
The ride consisted of a pep talk to Emmy, Oh Wonder's Livewire and lots of karaoke on Emmy's part.
As I slowed the vehicle to a stop in the school parking lot, my palms started to formulate sweat and butterflies started playing tag inside my stomach.
Alright Logan, you've got this. You're going to set everyone straight.
I climbed out the car and approached the school with Emmy by my side.
"Let's do this," I mumbled more to myself than the near nervous wreck beside me.
When we greeted our only other friend, Alex, he gave us weird stares.
"What's with the outfit man?" Alex asked with an amused expression painted onto his face.
"Well . . ." I began to explain, "You see Emmy here?" I pointed towards the girl next to me.
Alex nodded, mentally telling me to hurry it up.
"Yeah well, I'm dressed as Michael Jackson, and Emmy's dressed as Billie Jean. And well, Billie Jean, over here, is not my lover."
I looked up at Alex to see a look of clarification on his face.
"Oh, that's so clever, dude!" Alex complimented us.
Emmy smiled innocently before stealing all the credit, "Thanks, it wasn't that hard to come up with the idea. I mean, everyone thinks we're dating, so someone's gotta say it how it actually is."
I slapped her arm lightly before grinning, "Oh yeah, well who was the one about to pull out of my idea this morning?"
She scoffed before replying with with her overused comeback, "Whatever!"
The rest of the day was spent with us explaining our costume and Emmy stealing all the credit.
