At the end of the school day Hermione and Ginny headed back to their dorm not knowing what to expect from Lily, they strolled in to see Lily sat by the fire miserable. They approached her and tried to comfort her kindly. As Lily faked a smile, Hermione spoke.
"What's wrong, is it Snape?" Lily nodded her head and continued to stare into the fire.
"So.. You were really good friends, right?" Lily looked up and replied.
"Yeah, he started of really nice and I can never forget when he introduced me to magic! I guess he just hang out with the wrong people, I heard he even wants to be a death eater! Now his dark side has been unleashed, and well I can't be friends with someone who called me a mudblood."
Hermione and Ginny did their best sympathetic faces which didn't turn out so well as they hoped, but Lily ignored their attempt and glanced into the fire again. Hermione and Ginny quietly left her to herself and tiptoed up the stairs.
As soon as they were inside their room, their thoughts and emotions (they had been hiding from Lily) suddenly flooded out. "I cant believe it! He's as arrogant as he is in our time." Ginny nodded her head,
"Well I can't say I'm surprised, I think you need a build up of 10 years to be as cruel and grumpy as he is now! And besides, he must have been actually nice if Lily was friends with him!"
"Yeah, I guess that's what the Slytherin house does to you, and the people in it."
Hermione humorously scoffed at the thought of him being kind and lay down exhausted, she had had a day full of surprises, tears and laughter that she had completely forgotten the dinner with the slug club! She gravely gasped and jumped out of her seating place. Ginny: startled and confused dared to ask Hermione what all the fuss was about.
"The Slug Club! Remember, I forgot! Wait, I can still make it." Hermione said relived finishing with a sigh. Even though she wasn't delighted on attending, she could never disappoint a teacher and (most importantly) she would never forgive herself if she arrived late for an event or class.
Hermione soared down the stairs and through the corridors and arrived at Slughorn's office, she knocked on the door twice; then glanced behind to realise Ginny had followed her. Hermione was bewildered as to why she was here, and then whispered as politely as she could (sounding harsh) "you're not invited remember?"
She pointed to the other door vastly with her arm and raised her eyebrows as if Ginny was a child being sent to the principles office. Ginny, (who had clearly misunderstood the situation and had clearly forgotten she hadn't received a invitation) understood the message and headed back to the dorm.
As the door creaked open Hermione saw a friendly face with welcoming arms, it was Slughorn. "You're a bit late aren't you!" He chuckled. "Yeah... Sorry about that." Slughorn just smiled and directed her to her seat. As she sat she felt extremely anxious; everyone staring at her and wondering who she was and why she was here.
Slughorn started the conversation again but first interrogated Hermione who began to develop crimson cheeks. " Hermione, I already know you are very clever when it comes to potions and I hear from the other teachers that you are excellent also! So where did you come from before Hogwarts?"
Hermione froze. She gulped so loud she was pretty sure everyone heard, she had been expecting this question all week. It finally came. "Err... Well" She paused to think, covering it with multiple coughs. She knew there were only eight that existed but decided the best thing was to say a school they had no idea of, so if they asked questions about it she could lie and not be caught out.
Instantly a school came in mind, in a book she had once read, it said there is a school in the United States but she had completely forgotten the name. However, she decided to blurt it out anyway. "I went to the Wizarding school in New York."
"New York! Wow, I had no idea you were American!" Slughorn said overexcitedly.
"Yeah... I was born there but recently moved here."
"Well good, no school is better than Hogwarts!" He replied with a chuckle, Hermione faked a smile and sighed in relief.
"So what is this school called again, I have completely forgot." Slughorn continued. Hermione bit her lip nervously but before she spoke another member walked through the door; Lily.
She was appointed by Slughorn to a seat which she glared at but refused to sit. Hermione then realised what the problem was, Snape was sat next to that chair.
So Lily sat at the other empty chair leaving a confused Slughorn and an ashamed Snape; the dinner began, well Hermione and Lily had missed the dinner, so only the dessert was left. As it was brought out Hermione licked her lips, it looked heavenly delicious: a strawberry sundae. Hermione smiled at Lily who looked cheered up now and both began to eat their dessert joyfully.
So sorry the chapter was late. Hope you liked it though.
