I played with the hem of my dress, biting at my bottom lip. Colton grabbed my hand and gave me a reassuring smile. I sent him a small one back, my stomach twisting as we waited for the door to open. Finally, it swung open revealing a girl that looked very similar to Colton.
"What's up, Colt? Long time, no see," she smiled, bringing him into a hug then turning to me "Who is this?"
I bit back a grimace at her tone of voice. "I'm- um- his girlfriend, (Y/N) (L/N)."
"Huh," she huffed "thought you'd look a lot different."
My eyes widened and I turned towards Colton in disbelief as she walked back into the house. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose before looking at me.
"I'm so sorry, (Y/N). That's the last thing I expected to come from her,"
I shook my head, anger slowly rising. "Please, let's just go inside."
He entered first, me trailing behind with my head down. I was nervous before this, but now I didn't even know if I could meet another one of his family members without feeling like screaming.
"Colton!" The voice of another woman echoed through the oddly quiet household and my stomach dropped even lower.
"Hi mom," he replied.
"You must be (Y/N)," I lifted my head and smiled "it's so nice to finally meet you. Colton has told us so much about you."
"All good things I hope," I laughed softly, twirling my ring around my finger.
She grinned. "Oh, of course! He did forget to mention that you were so shy, though... Well, let's get to eating shall we? Everyone is at the table."
I took a deep breath and grabbed Colton's arm, preparing myself for what awaits. At the table sat a man who I presumed was his father, his two sisters, and his brother. His mom took off her apron and sat next to his dad. Colton pulled my chair out for me and sat down in the seat next to mine. I slowly sank down, moving myself closer to the table.
It was quiet for a moment before his brother spoke up. "I don't know if you know this, but you're really hot."
I brought my hand up to my mouth to stop myself from spitting water out and took a napkin to clean the liquid that had escaped onto my lip.
"Barely," his sister mumbled, the other one laughing at the comment.
"Tyler!" his mom shrieked.
"Dude! Not funny!" Colton yelled.
"So (Y/N), what do you do for a living?" His father spoke for the first time that night.
"I- uh- I'm a college student. I'm studying to be a journalist, but I work at a coffee shop when I'm not in class," I fiddled with my fingers, not maintaining eye contact for too long.
"You're a barista? They don't make anything," one of the girls snorted.
"So you're living off of our brother, then," the other stated, picking up her glass and taking a long sip, all the while glaring at me.
"Anna, Trinity, that's enough. Stop making fools of yourselves and shut up," Colton ordered.
"No, I'm not living off of Colton. I don't need to. I make enough money to get myself by. I'm not dating him for money if that's what you're thinking," I was already done with this night.
"Actually, yeah. That's exactly what we're thinking," his dad chuckled "you met at one of his games, didn't you? That means you obviously know what position of work he's in and how much he's paid."
"I would never date someone for their money," I spat, standing up "I'm astonished that I was invited into your household only to be treated like I'm just some barely dressed groupie he found outside of the arena. I have respect for myself and others. I am a human being. I have feelings, too. That's obviously something this family doesn't know. I'm sorry I'm being rude, but I'm not going to sit here and continue to be tormented by the people who I expected to accept me. Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to leave."
I rushed out of the room, grabbing my jacket. I heard another chair screech against the floor, but I ran out of the house before I could be stopped.
Colton's POV
"Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to leave."
I sat at the table, completely speechless as to how my own family treated this absolutely amazing girl.
"Are you happy now? Is that what you wanted? To drive her out of the house? To possibly drive her out of my life?" I got up this time.
"Colton, you're being dramatic," my sister rolled her eyes "she's just overreacting."
"Shut the hell up!" I barked, surprising everyone "Haven't you already done enough? You're the reason all of them started thinking that way anyway. I don't understand why you said all those things. I love her! She was going to be my wife and now I don't even know if she wants to see me again!"
They all stared at me. I don't know if it was from the fact that I stood up to all of them or the fact that I had just told them all about our engagement. I let out a breath of frustration, then ran out of the house.
She was sitting in the driveway, at the very end. Her flats were laid next to her and her head was thrown back, letting the light drizzle of rain hit her face. I laughed to myself and shuffled over to her, dropping down next to her as well. She sighed when I wrapped my arm around her waist and rested her head on my shoulder.
"There's not a day that goes by that I don't want to see you. I want you to know that just because your family was like that with me doesn't mean I love you any less. I'm just shocked that you came from the same family as them," she joked, holding my left hand in hers.
"I thought too big of my family and overplayed the exact scenario that I wanted to happen tonight. That was my first mistake,"
"What was the other?" she asked in a quiet voice.
"Accepting the invitation. I thought it would turn out a lot better than that, but I should have known something was going to go wrong. I mean... not as bad as it did, but I did expect something to happen,"
She shifted. "I guess I would've understood it a little more if the whole 'girl using you for money thing' had happened before, but you said I was the first girl you've ever brought home, right?" I nodded in response."That's why I don't get it. I never gave them a reason to dislike me, so I just... don't understand why I was treated so poorly."
I kissed the top of her head. "You didn't deserve any of that. No one deserves to be treated like that. You're perfect to me. None of their opinions matter to me because I love you and nothing is going to change that."
Requested by SprinklesKanye :) I wasn't given a scenario, so I hope you like it!
