Quiana set down her coffee cup and got back to work. She worked at a children's hospital and had to check on one of the patients.
"How're ya doing, Ivy?" Ivy was her sweet eight year old niece. This was her last day in there before going home. Ivy had to have surgery on her stomach to remove a black spot that would've eventually engulfed it.
"Real good," smiled Ivy. "My tummy is kinda grouchy though. Can I have something to eat?"
"Sure, but something small. You just had lunch," grinned Quiana. She loved what she did. She loved helping the adorable little kids, especially her niece. There were also downsides to the job, though. She loved the cute little conversations she had with the children, but she hated seeing some kids suffer. Not every kid came out of the hospital well and alive.
There was one girl that particularly pulled her heart strings. Her birthday was today, so Quiana thought she might stop by her house and give her a Dairy Queen gift card to wish her a happy birthday. She was turning sixteen today, something she was talking about for the past month. The girl was so sweet, so wise.
Quiana grabbed a cookie from the snack table for Ivy. It reminded her of the girl, Laura. Laura loved when Quiana got her cookies. "Yeah, buddy!" She'd exclaim.
Quiana was happy to know Laura was in her home today, and not the hospital. She was only released last week, but would have to come back in next week to check up on her chemo treatment.
Doctors were trying to make the cancer go away, but it was pretty serious, pretty life threatening. It was spreading throughout her body. It began in her brain, but by now it was in nearly every organ in her body. Remission was Laura's only option for an extended lifetime, because the cancer would never terminate.
That fact made Quiana so glum. She grew to really care for Laura, and hated the thought of her passing away so young, so innocent, so inexperienced. Her living should only be beginning, not ending. Part of Quiana was also a little grateful. She was glad to know Laura wouldn't struggle and suffer as long as most people. She wouldn't have to live on as the world continued to corrupt; she could escape it.
Quiana realized she was thinking too much and Ivy was expecting her cookie. She came back into the room with a smile. "Here ya go, Sweetheart!"
