Christmas SpecialI was waken up early in the morning on December 25th by Annabeth Chase, my half-sister.
"What?" I groggily asked her.
Her face lit up with joy. "It's Christmas morning!"
I tumbled out of bed, not even bothering to change out of my black shorts and NYC T-Shirt that I got on a field trip to Olympus one time. I put my slippers on and followed Annabeth, who was wearing her pajamas as well.
The two of us raced to where the camp fire usually was.
My eyes widened in amazement. Even though I have seen this sight for six years, it still awed me.
Instead of a campfire, there was a large pine tree. There were ornaments on it, some symbols for the twelve Olympians.
There was an owl for my mother; a trident for Poseidon; a lightning bolt for Zeus; a helm for Hades; a shoe with wings for Hermes; a lyre for Apollo; a dove for Aphrodite; a grape vine for Diynossis; a boar for Ares; a bow and arrow for Artemis.
Chiron helped pass out gifts, oldest to younger. This meant Annabeth and I had to wait.
Annabeth, who was older than me by two months, got a Yankee's hat from mom. When she put it on, she was completely invisible.
"Woah!" Annabeth exclaimed after removing the hat from her head.
"Here's something from your dad," Chiron told her, passing her a small wrapped box.
Annabeth opened it, surprised that she would get anything from her father.
When she opened it up, her gray eyes went wide.
"It's his class ring from high school!" Annabeth told me, ecstatic.
"That's cool," I told her, truthfully meaning it. She nodded in reply.
"And last, but certainly not least, we have Adele!"
Chiron passed me a gift from mom.
I opened it, hoping that there'd be something like Annabeth's Yankee's hat.
Much to my surprise, I ended up pulling out some sort of guide to taking care of owls. It came with a gift card of a hundred galleons to Eeylops Owl Emporium.
"Chiron, what the fuck are galleons?" I asked him.
He was taken aback by my word choice.
"I have no clue where you learned that word-" he took a quick look at the members of the Area cabin- "but I can only say that they are a type of currency in a part of England. And your mother... I am going to hold on to this, alright Adele? You will get it back when the time is right."
"Okay," I glumly replied.
The rest of my siblings got cool magical items! Malcolm got a set of blueprint papers that draw anything that comes to his mind. Annabeth get an invisibility hat.
I got a giftcard to a fucking Owl shop. In England.
I hid my feelings as I asked Chiron a question.
"Is there anything... From my father?"
"Why would your father- a mass murderer- send you a Christmas gift?" Sherman, one of the members of the Ares cabin crudely asked.
I saw red.
Unable to control my actions, I stalked up to him and pulled him by the shirt.
"Say anything like that one more time, I'll slug you."
"Your father is in prison."
There was a loud crunch as I brought my fist to Sherman's nose.
Cheers rang through out the camp.
"You'll pay for this one day, Black!" Sherman threatened before running off with his goons.
I calmed myself down and went back to Chiron.
"But is there..." I trailed off.
Chiron shook his head.
In a sympathetic tone, he admitted to me, "No, I'm sorry Adele."
I didn't find it to be fair. All of the other kids received presents from their mortal parents. Except me. My father had to be a mass murderer.
My father had to be in stupid prison.
"It's alright," I lied to Chiron.
I got up and walked to my cabin and sat down on my bunk. I hung my head in shame.
Tears leaked my eyes. Would my life be different if he wasn't locked away somewhere? Would those things called galleons make sense?
I let my frustrations out by grabbing a pen and a piece of paper.
Using a clipboard with the paper and pen, I began to draw.
I started drawing what the prison that my father was locked away in looked like during Christmas.
It was dull, gray and triangular and in the middle of an open ocean.
I had drawn Christmas Tree's on the sides of the prison.
A word for the prison randomly came to my mind.
I wrote it down on it in scratchy font.
"Azkaban".
Merry Christmas!
