Chapter 7 : Estranged

Touka and Kaneki were dancing. She opened the zipper on his mask. He leaned forward, touching her face gently. She closed her eyes, getting closer to him. Their forehead met, and she blushed. "Touka-chan, I....." She waited, waited for the two words. "I'm so sorry." Everything vanished, all turned into pure darkness. Rize appeared, Eto appeared, holding Kaneki on both sides. "Touka-chan...I'm so sorry..." He said, and she screamed.

"KANEKI!!!" She shouted, panting, sweating. "Onee-chan, are you okay?" Hinami opened her door slightly. "I-I'm fine, Hinami-chan. Why're you still awake?" Said Touka. Hinami came in and closed the door. "I woke up and heard onee-chan shouting." Said Hinami, and she sat down on Touka's bed.

"What did I shout?" Asked Touka. "You... onee-chan you were shouting onii-chan's name." Said Hinami. "Did something bad happen?" Asked Hinami, and Touka looked down.

"I don't know, Hinami-chan. Maybe it's bad, maybe it's good, I really don't know..." Said Touka, gripping her blanket tightly. "Onee-chan...." Hinami wanted to help her, comfort her, but she had no idea how to do that.

"Go to bed, Hinami-chan. I'll be fine, really. Don't worry about me." Said Touka, smiling weakly. "Okay.... good night, onee-chan." Said Hinami. She left the room. She stood in front of her door, she could hear her sobbing.

"Onee-chan.... I will help you.... after all you've done for me, I'll do my best to cheer you up." Hinami thought firmly, and went to bed.

The next day Touka woke up around noon. She was horrified when she saw the time, but when she rushed downstairs, she saw Hinami at the bar, cleaning the tableware with Kaneki.

"Good morning, onee-chan!" Said Hinami. "Wha--"
"Yoshimura-san said you can take a rest today, I'll help and do your work." Said Hinami cheerfully. She nodded, and saw Kaneki looking down at his own fingers, not even greeting her. "Okay, thank you, Hinami-chan. I'll go back to my room now. I think I really need to sleep." Said Touka, and she went upstairs.

"Onii-chan, what happened?" Asked Hinami. "I... I......" Hide entered the cafe. "Hey, Kaneki and Hinami-chan." Said Hide cheerfully. Hinami gave him a little nod, but Kaneki said nothing, still looking down at his fingers.

"Huh? What's going on?" Asked Hide. He could see dark clouds above Kaneki's head. "Onii-chan seems to have some problem with onee-chan." Hinami whispered to Hide.

"Kaneki, what happened?" Asked Hide, sitting down at the bar. He looked up. "I.... kinda screwed everything up..." He said miserably. Kaneki told the two what had happened last night and explained why he didn't kiss her. Hinami looked a bit sad after hearing that, and Hide slapped his forehead and slapped Kaneki's.

"Kaneki, for the first time, I think you're a stupid, numb, slow, idiotic, clumsy, and ungrateful guy." Said Hide, shaking his head. "What was that all about?" Asked Kaneki gloomily.

"Touka-chan's such a good, pretty, strong, wonderful girl, and you rejected her. Why did you even do that?? It's like you almost had a gold bar, but you threw it away when it's in your hand." Said Hide, and he sighed.

"She's like my sister....." Said Kaneki. "Kaneki!!! Wake up already!!! Stop lying to yourself!!!" Shouted Hide, shaking him. "I know!!!! It's my fault!!! And I don't even know why I did that!!! It's my fault!!! My fault!!! All my fault!!!!" Shouted Kaneki, punching the bar. Hinami looked a bit scared. She'd never seen Kaneki like that before. Hide sighed again. "You'd better go apologize to her." Said Hide. Kaneki nodded and went upstairs like a zombie.

"Whats with the shouting? What happened??" Asked Yoshimura, walking out of the staff room. "It was Kaneki." Said Hide. "Looks like Kaneki-kun's going through the toughest part of life." Said Koma. "Yeah, love is beautiful, but it's also painful." Said Irimi. "Well, may god bless those two." Said Yoshimura.

Kaneki went upstairs, and stopped in front of Touka's room. He stood there, trying to knock the door, but he didn't have the courage to do that. He'd been thinking that all these years, Touka was there with him. When he was happy, she was there. When he was sad, she was there. When he needed help, she was there. When he was bullied, she was there. He had always thought her as his sister, and he never thought about his feeling for her. Now she'd slipped away through his fingers. He'd lost his chance. He knew her too well, and he knew she will either come back and forgive him, or be mad at him and leave him forever. He'd finally realized what that weird feeling in his heart was. He'd finally known why she was angry when she saw him having fun with Rize and Eto, and he'd also known she might never come back again. He knocked on her door.

"Touka-chan....." He said, no responses. "Please, listen to me." Said Kaneki. He heard footsteps. Touka was leaning against the door at the other side. "Touka-chan, I have to apologize, for what I've done yesterday. I don't really know why I did that, but I know I'm the biggest jerk in the world. I'm so sorry." Said Kaneki. Touka's heart twitched when she heard those three words. I'm so sorry. She had an urge to open the door and punch him, but she remained calm, listening to him.

"I want to let you know that... I'm stupid, I was always reading, I never paid attention about things like that. I missed my chance, it's my fault, I want you to know, I want to start it all over again." Said Kaneki, waiting. He could feel his heart pounding against his chest.

"Kaneki....." He heard her, and looked up at the door, still waiting. "Leave me alone...." Said Touka. Something inside Kaneki's heart shattered, like a mirror that was hit by a rock. His inside was bleeding. He dropped to his knees, crying. Touka, at the other side of the door, slid down to the floor, and buried her facing into her hands, sobbing.
