WARNINGS: drinking, death

Scott was only fourteen when his parents decided to divorce. He never understood exactly of why it happened, but now that he is eighteen, he has a boarder understanding of why Rick and Connie are not together anymore.

Connie liked to see other men...a lot. Rick found out one day and wanted a divorce, but Connie told him that she will no longer cheat on him and all was well. That is, until Rick found emails from a man named Peter. Rick left without saying goodbye, leaving Connie and Scott by themselves.

Scott wanted nothing more than for his parents to be together again. He just wants them to love each other.

~~~
Scott sighed as he saw the man walk inside. Connie always had men over and they always left. Whenever they came over, Connie was drunk like there was no tomorrow. Scott just wanted his mom to be there for him.
"Mom, just put the bottle down and love me," Scott begged quietly, his blue eyes full of tears. He blinked once, allowing a tear to run down his face. "Please love me."
Scott always treasured love. Rick used to tell him that love was an amazing thing and that he will be the luckiest man in the world once he gets it. Rick told Scott constantly that he deserves love because he was, is, the sweetest no ever. Scott wouldn't tell Connie this, but he texted his dad all the time. He sighed to himself as he heard his mom laugh hysterically, shaking his head.
Every night.
"Scott," Connie called out, laughing afterwards. "I have a surprise for you!"
"Oh, great," Scott murmured, walking out of his room. There was his mom, a drunken smile on her face and a man that was a bit taller than Scott. "Who is this?"
"This is Ray. He's your new dad," Connie answered, kissing Ray sloppily. He rubbed his face and nodded, looking bored. "Oh, Ray, you'll just love Scott. He's a sweetheart."
"I'm pretty sure that I will," Ray commented, nodding at Scott. Scott tried to smile, but it came out as a grimace. "You want some wine, Con? If you don't, I'll make you a margarita or something."
"Oh, I'll just have the whole bottle," Connie replied, still laughing even though it was at nothing. She looked up at Scott and laughed once more. "I love wine more than I love you!"
Ouch.
"That's just the alcohol talking, Mom," Scott murmured, knowing that his mom will snap out of it once she's sober. "I love you, Mama."
Connie didn't respond. She walked into the kitchen, talking to Ray about something that sounded like nonsense. Scott sighed to himself once more as he wiped his eyes, wanting his parents back together.
This isn't how love is supposed to be. Mom, you don't love Ray. Please understand that isn't love.
"Love Dad again, please."
A MONTH LATER
Scott walked into the place he worked at, smiling to himself. Today was a happier day and he couldn't help but love it. Scott wasn't one to throw the word love around, of course. If he had a deep connection with something, he will express it and refuse to stop loving it. Love was probably his favorite word ever. His dad taught him if since he was in his mom's stomach. He sighed happily as he went behind the cash register.
"How are you today, Scott?" Tyler asked, adjusting his glasses. "You look really happy today."
"I am and I don't know why," Scott replied, shrugging his shoulders. Sure, Ray was still there. He drank a lot and it scared him to no end. "My mom is still gung-ho over Ray. She thinks she's in love with him, but I see the truth."
Tyler nodded sadly as he turned back to his station, smiling at a customer. Scott heard someone walk to him and he turned on his cash register, not noticing the person in front of him.
"Hello, I hope you found everything that you were looking for," Scott replied, looking up at the customer. He widened his eyes a bit, surprised at the person in front of him. "Dad?"
"Scott," Rick began, his eyes filling up with tears. Scott stopped what he was doing, afraid of what his dad had to say. "It's your mother."
Scott's heart stopped beating momentarily. He felt himself stumble, but he held onto something before he fell. He shook his head, afraid to hear what happened to her.
"What happened?"
Rick shook his head, not wanting to answer. Scott waited patiently, afraid to hear the news. Rick sighed as a tear ran down his cheek, finally revealing the truth.
"There was an accident."
~~~

Scott gasped as he looked at his new burnt down house. He didn't really have anything special in there since he down most of his time at his dad's, but the house he grew up in was gone. Rick talked to an E.M.T and police officer, obviously upset. Connie is dying and there is nothing they could do.

"There was man named Ray," he police officer informed Rick. "He was one who started the fire. He started it because he was jealous. He knew about Connie's affairs so he just set the house on fire while she was still in it."

Scott flinched when he heard those words. His mom is dying all because of Ray's jealously. He wanted nothing more than to put Ray into a burning house so he could know what Connie must have gone through.

Mama, I love you so much.

"Scott?" A weak voice called out. It was Connie, whose face was covered in soot and burns, is on a stretcher. Scott nodded as he walked up to her, his eyes full of tears. "I'm so sorry, kiddo."

"Don't be sorry," Scott replied, kissing his mom's forehead. "Please be okay, Mama."

"It's my time, Scott," Connie whispered, her voice becoming weak. An E.M.T picked up a body bag, knowing what he will have to do. "Scott, I'm sorry I couldn't be a better mother. I...love-"

She closed her eyes, breathing one last time. Scott fell on his knees, crying loudly. He felt Rick's arms wrap around him, holding onto him tightly. Scott tried to get out of the embrace, but he knew it wasn't worth it. His mom is dead.

"Scott, she loved you so much. Never forget that."

Love is nothing but a word.

Scott held onto his father, wanting his mother back. He went to the point were he cried so hard he began to wail. He wanted his mom back, nothing more nothing less.

Never again did he experience love the same.
