Jackson smiled at the teenagers, frowning slightly when she noticed the sad looks on their faces. They didn't talk to each other like they usually do before every meeting and wondered what was going on. She sighed as she sat down, looks at every teenager. She cleared her throat, getting their attention.
"Today is the day were we say why we are here. No backing out, okay? No judgement is allowed," Jackson told each of them, looking straight at Kevin. "Kevin, do you mind starting?"
"I guess not," Kevin answered, sighing to himself. He could already feel the tears well up in his eyes. "About four months ago, I was accepted to Yale. The first person I told was-"
Kevin stopped right there, swallowing the lump that began to grow in his throat. He sighed, carrying on with his story. The others nodded, patiently waiting to hear the rest.
"The first person I told was my brother Kellen," Kevin continued, a tear running down his face. Jackson handed him a tissue and he took it gracefully. "He was so excited. I was going to take him to Yale with me. I received a full-ride scholarship and everything. Everything was going the way it was supposed to do. All of that changed quickly though."
Kevin felt more tears run down his face and wiped his eyes, not wanting to cry in front of anybody. Kirstie looked over at Mitch, her heart breaking at the sight. Scott and Avi watched Kevin, waiting to hear the rest of the story.
"I was at orchestra rehearsal one day and all was going well until my teacher went up to me. He told me something bad happened and I needed to go home right away," Kevin got out, crying quietly. Mitch teared up, afraid of sharing his own story and feeling his heart break for Kevin. "I went home and I found out that Kellen committed suicide. The reason why was because of my parents being so neglectful. My mom smoked constantly and my dad was an alcoholic. They didn't even care that he died! I lost my best friend."
Kevin sobbed quietly, wiping his eyes. Jackson gave him another tissue and looked over at Avi, nodding slowly. Avi wiped his own eyes and took a deep breath, beginning his story.
"About four months ago, I went to see my dad in the cemetery. He has been dead for a while now. He died from a drug overdose," Avi began, his voice shaking. "My mom is a drug addict too and my brother is a pothead. All they do is drugs and smoke pot. They don't care.
"On the day I went to see my dad, my sister was at my house and tries ton convince me to leave. I refused at first, but after hearing some cruel words from my brother, I began to pack some of my stuff. I was missing one thing though."
Avi took a tissue and wiped his eyes, sighing deeply. Scott felt his own eyes well up with tears, but he blinked quickly to make them disappear. He refuses to show his emotions.
"I was missing my guitar. That was he last thing my dad gave me," Avi continued, playing with the tissue. "Turns out my brother had it and he bro-broke it. He ruined the last thing my dad gave me. My dad died and it was all my fault. I should have saved him."
Avi closed his eyes, sobbing quietly as Kevin rubbed his back. Kirstie began to cry herself, not liking the depressed mood. Mitch bit his lip to keep himself from crying, but he whimpered quietly and a tear ran down his face. Scott looked over at Jackson, knowing that it was his turn to share.
"I lived with my mom until four months ago," Scott began, his voice shaking slightly. Shoot. "She was an alcoholic and brought a man home every night in her drunk state. She cheated on my father almost all the time. Anyway, she brought a man home named Ray.
"I hate that man so much. My mom drank constantly. She was the reason why her and my dad are divorced. She didn't care at all."
Scott felt a tear on his face, knowing that there was no way that he will not cry now. He breathed heavily, moving onto the story.
