"Late again, Ms. Kendo. May I ask why?" Mrs. Baren commented on my fashionable tardiness.
"Locker jammed." More like Eva and I were struggling with our science fair project we had to finish tonight. Eva however ditched me at the end of lunch and all my stuff kept falling when I walked with it. Inez saw and that was a whole level of embarrassment itself.
The teacher crosses the class to her desk shaking her head slowly. I plop into my seat letting out a sigh, mentally preparing for another long class.
"I'd hate to give you another detention for your tardiness. What's the real reason you're late?" My jaw fell open at her remark. She's probably the nicest teacher in the entire school and she's pulling one of these?
How rude. I thought in Stephanie Tanner 's voice
"My locker got jammed because of my coat. That's the real reason."
"You know you are to go to your locker before lunch not after it."
The sound of a pin dropping could've been heard in the silence.
"I'm letting you off with a warning because you're a good student."
I let go a breath of air I was holding in. I ruffle through my bag to pull out my pencil and open up my binder. The class begins and Mrs. Baren rants about the science fair being moved over to Wednesday afternoon due to the ceiling of the gym being under construction. Having an extra two days to finish the project will most likely improve our grade on it.
During the class I notice that it's quieter than usual, giving me peace at last. I scribble down notes for most of the class until Ashton quietly comes through the door. Seeing as how the door itself squeaks, the sound of him coming in would've been heard. Eva, however, quickly got up, signed out and left to the bathroom, covering up the sound of the door by appearing as though she was the one who opened the door.
Ashton quickly jogged to the desk, wrote on something and placed a small stack of papers on her desk. Mrs. Baren was somehow the whole time paying attention to another student and never even noticed.
Whilst still blindly attending another student, Mr. Baren had her back to Ashton the whole time as he slipped into his seat. Then he leaned towards Inez and I, keeping his voice down.
"Say I've been here the whole time." He whispered. Inez gives me a confused look which I mirrored.
The teacher finally goes back to her normal spot in front of the class and then notices Ashton sitting at his table, filling out a worksheet.
"Ashton when did you come in?" The teacher inquires.
I'll give Ashton some credit, he really has a way with words. He completely bullshitted a story about her sending him to the office to make copies of a packet, which was the exact one her was filling out. He then told her to check the attendance that he had been checked off.
"So that's why he went to her desk." Inez whispered to me. I smiled and nodded at her before returning my attention to the teacher and Ashton.
"I know I'm not loosing my marbles. I can guarantee you that you were not here when I did the attendance."
"That's quite a guarantee for someone who clearly marked me off the attendance. Go look." Just as Ashton had said, his name was checked off as present and a small stack of papers were on her desk.
I'll admit, that was pretty damn smart of him.

At the end of the day I ran to my locker and grabbed my things rushing out to my car. That science fair will be the death of me.
