*Fionna's POV*

He retreated to a corner, inspecting his wrist. "No no no. Why isn't it ticking, why isn't it ticking?! It was ticking before, what did you do?!"
I looked at my own, before holding it up and listening to it. Nothing. The clock was stopped at midnight, but if he was my soulmate, why wasn't it ticking?!

And it was impossible for the Wandering Demon to be my soulmate. Impossible.

He stopped looking at his watch, and looked at me, fire blazing in his eyes. Faster than I thought he could move, he had me pinned against the nearest wall. "What did you do?!"
"I did nothing." I snarled. "You touched my watch. You destroyed it! You-you monster!"

He flinched, almost imperceptibly. "I am not a monster. I didn't bother your watch, beyond grabbing your wrists to keep from strangling me. Either your watch is the weakest I've ever seen, or it wasn't me."
"Demon." I hissed. "You're soulless, why do you have a watch!? It's a trick, you ruined mine!"

"Half-demon. And they have watches as well. Now, tell me why my watch isn't ticking!"
"Because you've already found your soulmate." A new voice interrupted.
The demon frowned in recognition, and I started squirming. "Gumball, my sword is in the wall! Pull it out and stab him!"

"Marshall Lee is annoying at times, but no. Stabbing him is going a bit too far. Marshall, please release Fionna."
"She made my watch stop ticking." He growled.
"Liar! You stopped my watch!" I snarled.

"Yes, yes. You two stopped each other's watches. That's how it works. Did neither of you know this?" I heard him pull out a chair.

The demon slowly let go, and we joined him.
"I know that when it gets to twelve you've found your soulmate, but not the ticking part." The demon said.

"Really? Didn't your parents ever tell..." Gumball trailed off at the look on the demon's face, before turning to me. "Didn't your parents ever tell you?"
I shifted awkwardly in my seat, but didn't answer.

"What are you doing here anyway?" The demon asked him.
"Came by to say hi. Fionna is a good friend of mine, and I admit I was curious. I never dreamed her soulmate would be you though."
I scowled. "He is not my soulmate. He can't be!"
"Who else have you met since we last spoke?"

"A... water nymph."
"Hmm. Unlikely." Gumball noted. "Nymphs don't have clocks. Besides, either you'd drown or they'd bring wood rot to you." He looked around pointedly.
"Okay, but consider, she tried to kill me." The demon pointed out.
Gumball sighed. "Why?"

"He tried to steal my house! He's a marauding demon!"
"True, and false. I believe the bit about the house, but the only crime Marshall Lee has committed is stealing people's hearts. He's a terrible flirt."
"You didn't seem to mind." Marshall smirked. It's easier than just calling him 'the demon'.

"How do you two know each other anyway?" I asked.
Gumball smiled sheepishly. "He's my ex-boyfriend. Had I known the turn of events that would have led us here, I wouldn't have pursued him... stop smirking, Marshall Lee."
"Nah, Gumwad. You were really cute."
"I wouldn't go down that road if I were you. Bryce has quite a jealous streak, and Fionna has already proved she's not averse to you nearly dying."

He shot me a withering look for some reason, before continuing. "If the two of them teamed up, I doubt you would survive. Besides, my relationship with Bryce is far more meaningful than ours ever was. We should definitely rekindle our friendship though."
Marshall huffed, and leaned back in his chair. "I bet Bryce never tried to kill you for taking back what's yours."

"Here's a fun thought. Why don't the two of you share the house and just live together?" Gumball asked.
"Are you kidding me?" Marshall and I said in unison.
"There are reports all over the place of him causing trouble!" I began.
"She hates me! She will try to murder me in my sleep!"

He looked at us placidly. "I admit that you two haven't made this easy for yourselves. Abandon that mess for now. Fionna won't hurt you if you aren't evil. Fionna, you know me. You know I wouldn't go near someone who is evil. Marshall rejected evil long ago. You trust me, right?"

I hesitated for a moment, before nodding. "I'm going to look through all those reports though. And I don't fully trust him."
Marshall scowled. "Well, I don't trust you."
Gumball sighed. "I suppose it's a start. Fionna, are you heading out tomorrow now that you've found your soulmate?"

"Sure. What's so important about this letter, anyway?"
"Wait, where is she going?" Marshall asked at the same time.
"Up the mountain to see her sister." Gumball answered coolly.
"The ailunthrope?" Marshall asked.

"The what?" I asked.
"Were-cat." Gumball clarified. "And yes. Cake's soulmate is my friend Lord Monochromicorn. Enclosed in the letter is a recipe he asked for, and some sensitive information."
"Are you planning to overthrow the government?" Marshall asked somewhat giddily. "You should have asked me."
Gumball shot him a cold glare, before sighing. "I know that you have many problems with the current king. They are justified. However, if I find out that you have been tampering with my mail in hopes of joining a revolution, I will send Bryce after you."

"Geez." Marshall huffed. "I bet Fionna is cuter than him anyway."
Gumball leaned back in his chair. "That was fast."
"No, I'm just competitive. We're going to outcouple you and Bruce."
"Bryce."
"Whatever, Fionna's actually pretty cute when she's not trying to kill me. Pretty cute anyway."

Gumball shot me a long look. "This may become a thing, so just humor him. He craves attention, and so that's going to be dumped on you now that he can't flirt with barmaids and stablehands without fear of you retaliating in some form. Of course, most people are shocked by his eye color so it doesn't go far, which I find stupid."
"Thank you." Marshall agreed. "I'm starting to wonder why we ever broke up."

"Because you got pouty over me paying more attention to my work than you." Gumball deadpanned.
"You didn't sleep for three days over Goliad." I pointed out.
Gumball shuffled sheepishly as Marshall fixed him with a pointed look. "Bet you pay attention to stupid Bryce." He murmured.
"You'll be fine with him, Fionna. He lets you know when you're not paying enough attention to him."
