*Marshall's POV*
At last the time of the trial dawned. I had been left in my cell overnight with very mediocre food. At least they gave me something --I suspect Fi got them to do it-- because drunkard barely got anything. Apparently he wasn't meant to be here this long.
Neither was I, really. A day for evidence gathering was clearly more than enough, though.
I was escorted, clanking down the dirt road, to the execution block (see, now they were going to decapitate me instead of burn me). Fionna and Jenna were already there, Jenna in a long green dress and Fionna in her blue shirt and skirt (apparently the armor wasn't needed for this) that I'd grown used to.
I noticed Jenna eyeing Fionna's legs, and narrowed my eyes. So that was what Fionna meant a few days ago. Jenna would kill me, then swoop in and steal my soulmate. People without soulmates often shacked up with similar people, thinking that their love would work, that it would start their clocks. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it didn't. Either way, I did not like Jenna eyeing my soulmate like that.
I glared at her, and waited for my 'trial' to begin.
Fionna started. "I collected testimonies from many people, and Marshall Lee didn't poison Caerwyn Callaghan."
"Moreland, pet. We didn't share a name." Jenna whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Right. Well, according to the coroner, Caerwyn was indeed poisoned..." Fionna explained everything, not that she needed to. These people were never going to listen to her, not when Callaghan--
"It's all true. I killed my father, and I blamed the half-demon." Callaghan's eyes glistened with crocodile tears.
I stared at Fionna, who was watching with interest. What did she do? Did she have to sell her soul...?
"It was cowardly. I thought he'd never come through again, and it all fell into place perfectly. He wasn't here to defend himself, I never... but my father was a cruel man. He cared more for his drink and whoring than anyone else, and I had to live with his barbed tongue, day after day. He was useless. He was awful. He hurt my mother, and he was responsible for her death, and none of you ever helped me, and..." She burst into sobs.
Fionna looked as if she was going to move to comfort her, but Jenna's head snapped up and she shook her head. "No. Don't give me your pity. None of you. I just want justice."
Poetic.
"As for the half-demon, he was innocent. Of everything. I never... he was never a part of it."
"You can search his belongings, he doesn't carry poison on him." Fionna agreed.
I held out my wrists expectantly, waiting to be freed.
"Why lie, Jenna?" The crowd began to murmur.
"Why change your story?"
"Maybe he got inside your head!"
I sighed, and relaxed back into position. This would clearly take a while.
"I already said I lied to protect myself." Callaghan said.
"And she changed her story, because... um..." Fionna turned scarlet, and Jenna smirked. "Because I felt bad. I never wanted an innocent man to die for what I did, and you all, being such understanding people, would let me off easier, wouldn't you?"
"Marshall can't do mind control stuff anyway, or he wouldn't be in chains right now." Fionna added.
I nodded, keeping an eye on Callaghan. She had clearly done something to Fi in exchange for my release.
"I think it's time we let them go." Callaghan breathed.
Someone stepped forward and released me, and Callaghan was carted away in chains. The crowd quickly dispersed. Callaghan didn't look back.
"That was a terrible trial." Fionna commented. "There was no judge, there was just..."
"Yeah, but it got me off, so there's that." I smiled, before pulling her into a hug. "What did Callaghan do to you?"
"N-nothing, we just kissed."
For all of her manipulative evil, Callaghan is pretty hot. "For me? Or...?"
"Wh... you've actually gone to tier 15 with her."
"That was before I met you."
"I was saving you."
"...But you kind of wanted to, right?"
"I wouldn't do it again."
"Actually, I'm not really judging." I laughed hollowly. "I mean, it's not like we're ever coming back here again, right? And-and it's never going to happen again?"
"Of course." She promised me. "I-I really am sorry though, she--"
"Yeah, I know all about what she does. But I... I'm... never mind. It's stupid, and I--"
"It's not stupid, say it." She told me.
"I'm enough for you, right?"
She nodded, before hugging me tightly. "Of course you're enough. You were always going to be enough. I don't... I wasn't thinking properly. I want you, not her. Please, I'm so sorry."
"It was only a kiss." I muttered as she released me. "Not like I haven't done stuff beyond that."
"Not since you met me."
"Yeah, but I always knew you would be there."
"You were lonely." She looked a bit sick in her stomach. "I really am sorry, Marshall. I've been... I shouldn't have done it, no matter what she said. I'm sorry. I hurt you, and I--"
I pulled her into another hug. "What's-what's done is done. You can't change it, you can't fix it. You love me, right?"
"Of course I do. I love you so much more than I ever thought I could."
"And you don't love her?"
"Not at all. She's manipulative, like you said. She's-she's not my soulmate. I barely know her. You... you're funny and caring and hot and smell nice and protective and..." She was rambling now. Rambling about me.
I smiled, before cutting her off with a small kiss. "We still have to go find your sister. If you stay here singing my praises you're going to be here forever."
She laughed. "I do love you."
"I know. I love you too. And I get it, Callaghan's hot. And I'm probably making too big of a deal out of something you didn't want to do--"
"I-I did." She stuttered.
I fought the rising tide of jealousy and desperation and thoughts of her leaving me. "Th-then who was better, Fi? Me or her?"
"You were. You can kiss passionately, or sweetly, or teasingly, or..." She laughed. "She's just raw passion."
I cuddled her, mollified for now. "Excellent answer, Fi."
She laughed. "Come on. We have to go."
I nuzzled the top of her head. "Just please don't leave me behind."
"I won't. I promise."
