*Fionna's POV*
Marshall wasn't there when I woke up. He wasn't off in the woods playing his guitar like when he wanted to come along, since it was still where I'd left it. He was just... gone.
I packed up our camp, and headed along, knowing he'd pop up eventually. He had to.Maybe something had happened to him?
I moved faster. Where was he? Maybe-maybe someone from Breighton had found him? I veered off course to head towards the town, breaking into a run. He had to be there, he had to have been seen, he couldn't just...
As I neared the town, I noticed that there was a tall structure, and someone was making a speech, punctuated by cheers every so often.
"--killed my father, despite everything we gave him!" A redheaded woman yelled from a platform, a fist raised to the sky. I pushed past people. "Hi, sorry, have you seen Marshall Lee--"
"That's the biggest pile of bull I've ever heard. I demand a trial!" Marshall growled. My head snapped up, searching for him. When I finally found him, tied to a small stake in the ground that people were beginning to cover with wood, I stopped being polite. I shoved people to the ground while I got out my sword.
"Oh, please don't--"
I ignored Marshall and cut the bonds around his hands, before kicking away the wood around his feet. "Are you okay?" I asked after cutting the rope around his ankles and grabbing his hand.He blinked at me in surprise, before smiling. "Yeah. Yeah, I am. But now we've got to run."
Despite our intentions, we were quickly surrounded.
"Get behind me." He whispered.
"You don't have a weapon and we're surrounded." I hissed back."What, you want to be burned up, too?" He growled.
The redheaded woman came towards us, the crowd parting for her.
"Who are you?" She asked me, narrowing her eyes.
I drew myself up to my full height. "I'm the Blue Knight."
She seemed to consider this. "But that's the Wandering Demon."Marshall muttered something, but I shushed him. "I know."
"Then why would you save him?"
"He's-he's my soulmate." I admitted. "And even if he did do it--"
"Which I didn't!" Marshall chimed in.
"--He deserves a trial." I finished."He had a trial. It's not our fault that he wasn't here to defend himself." The redhead snorted.
I scowled at her. "That doesn't count, and you know it."
"Oh, poor little pet... not all soulmates are good people."
"I am not your pet." I snapped. She smirked, and tapped her finger on her chin thoughtfully. "Very well. We'll hold a trial soon. You can collect evidence in the next few days, but we'll have to find something to do with him."
"I'm sticking with Fionna." Marshall snapped, taking my hand.
"Well, that's wonderful for you. You'll be able to clear your name beautifully if you're both in jail." The redhead cooed. "After all, we can't just let a known murderer wander around the town, now can we?""For the last time, Jenna! I am not a murderer!" Marshall growled. I tightened my grip on his hand, and his angry expression momentarily melted.
"If you are a murderer, you would protest your innocence. We're being good to you, Abadeer. We're giving you another chance. It's not like the first one, because one of the only people who was kind to you is dead now. And even so, be thankful we're letting you near your little precious soulmate."
"What do you mean?" I asked."Isn't it obvious? He's a dangerous, sociopathic creature that will lash out and hurt anyone who comes near him. That's obviously going to be directed towards you. But if he cooperates now, you can visit him in prison. Wouldn't a little visit be nice Abadeer?" She purred, placing a hand on her hip and biting her lip.
She tossed her head gently, causing her red hair to fall beautifully all over her shoulder. Her pink lips parted slightly, and her green eyes sparkled.
Marshall scoffed, snapping me out of it. "Funny, for someone accusing me of the murder of your father, you seem eager to get inside of my pants."She shrugged. "Think of it as a last desire sort of thing."
"Oh, like I need you when I have Fi."
She shot me a long look, then burst out laughing. "You're absolutely right, Abadeer. You'll be dead soon, and then she's going to need a shoulder to cry on. And besides, she's much cuter than you."
He scowled at her. "She's not interested.""I don't know, Abadeer. Seems like you're the one saying that, not her. And besides, she seemed pretty interested a few seconds ago."
His left eye began to twitch, and he ground his teeth. "Don't test me, Callaghan. I'll rip your thr... oh."
"You see? He's clearly volatile!" Callaghan announced to the crowd.
Marshall was wrestled out of my grasp and placed in chains, though he was clearly still pissed off over the entire situation with Callaghan.
I ran after him. "Don't worry, Marshall. I'm going to get you out of here."
"So you don't think I did it? Even a little?""Let it go, Marshall. Something is weird about this, and nothing fits together like you've actually murdered him. You don't seem like the type to be a murderer, or even really to hurt someone without a reason. Maybe they scared you into something. Maybe you were desperate. I don't know."
"Apology accepted." He seemed a little less pissed."I wasn't apologizing."
"It was close enough." He flashed a grin. "You no longer think I'm a straight up murderer, do you?"
"Aye." One of the people escorting him agreed. "I think y'are."
"Well, thankfully for my self-esteem, I wasn't talking to you." Marshall winked at me. "Come on, Fi. I'll be fine in whatever pit they throw me in. If anyone starts something, I can handle myself."
"Which is why you were tied to a stake earlier?" I smiled. He rolled his eyes. "Just go clear my name. I'll be fine."
I smiled at him, trying to hide my doubt. "If you say so."
I heard him sigh as I walked away, the chains rattling.
