"You look happier." Gumball noted the next time that I visited him.
I grinned. "Of course."
"So where's Marshall? You haven't tied him up in your basement, have you?" He wrinkled his nose.
Bryce poked his head in. "Gumball, she's practically a kid."
"Everyone has their own likes." Gumball defended.
Bryce shot him a long look, before sitting down at the kitchen table next to Gumball. "So where is your boyfriend, kid?"
I scowled at him. "You both are only three years older than me."
"And a good deal more responsible." Gumball clucked. "One does not leave one's partner in a tight situation, Fionna."
Bryce shot him a look, and Gumball glanced at him. "What? It was one time. We've both learned so much since then."
"Okay, I don't want to hear about you two doing weird beyond tier 15 stuff. No. Marshall and I are just working out where we want to live." I corrected them.
"That's extremely domestic." Gumball pointed out. "But ah well, we're not one to talk, are we Bryce?"
Bryce shook his head, before taking Gumball's hand.
Gumball leaned into his soulmate. "So, I assume Honoria still has Marshall? Pity. It would have been somewhat hilarious while heartwarming to watch him learn how to perform domestic tasks instead of living in the woods like an animal."
"Babe, we live in the woods." Bryce pointed out.
"We live in a cottage in the woods." Gumball corrected, before turning back to me. "So, did you need something, Fionna?"
"How do I make Marshall stay here?" I asked.
Gumball paused for a moment, before shrugging. "Tears, begging, bribery, petty assurances? In all honesty, this is new. He should hate it down there... what did you do to change that?"
"Nothing!" I insisted.
He shrugged. "Then I can't exactly help. I hope it works out, though."
I sighed. "Fine. Thanks, Gumball. Bye, guys!"
"Goodbye, Fionna!" Bryce called back.

*Marshall's POV*
"How do I convince Fionna to move down here?" I mused out loud.
Mom poked her head out of a nearby room. "The human girl? You shouldn't."
I whipped around to face her. "What do you mean? She's my soul mate. Even if you--"
"Marshall, I've explained this before. They're soap bubble creatures. They're nice while they last, but they will leave you. And in all honesty, she would never survive down here. She doesn't seem... domestic."
"I can convince her to hang up her sword. And I age the same way as her."
Mom paused to run a hand through my messy hair, despite my scowl at the thought of her touching me. "Perhaps. But I am significantly more invested in your longevity than hers. And when you take your first soul, you'll cease aging."
"I've taken a soul." I finally jerked my head away.
"Vampires don't count."
I crossed my arms. "And anyway, so what if she ages like that? I'm not taking a soul, and even then--"
"Marshall, if you bring her down here, she won't live past thirty."
"What?! No, if anyone lays a hand on her--!"
"Insolent child, listen to me. If the blonde human girl comes down here, she will be a beacon for every demon for miles around, including us. At least you understand the first part. But in any case, you or I may take her soul by accident. If not, we'll slowly absorb it day by day until she is nothing but a shell. Even that would soon collapse. Where would her air be, child? Her sunlight? Her water?"
"She'll be fine. And I'm not taking her soul! I'd rather die!"
"The more that you stay down here, the more demonic you become. You'd take it without realizing."
"Is that what happened to my father?!"
"Of course not, I'm not an idiot child who can't control myself. What happened to Anthony was out of my hands." Mom looked like she was trying to keep her temper.
"And what's to stop me from killing her up there?!"
"First of all, you're not going up there. Second of all, she'd at least have a better chance of defending herself. Friends, et cetera. " Mom waved her hand dismissively.
"That's it, I'm leaving." I rose from the chair I'd been sitting on and began stomping past Mom down the hall.
"Be sensible, Marshall. Down here, you will have eternity."
"It will be eternity if she's not there!"
"Fine, bring your soap bubble love down. Don't think I didn't warn you; I was trying to spare you falling even more in love with the girl, Marshall. She's sickeningly good, it can't possibly be good for your health."
"You evil--!"
"Thank you, Marshall, but this is no time for flattery."
"I'm leaving. Forever. And you can't stop me!" I snarled, leaning into her face.
Mom was unimpressed. "Don't force my hand, Marshall. I had assumed that you were mature enough to take your rightful place. Was I wrong?"
"Yes!"
"Unfortunate. Well, you'll just have to stay down here until it blows past. I can't let you near that girl, having you father a litter of bastards would help absolutely no one, least of all us. You'd fight tooth and nail to be near them, and she'd fight for you, and it would essentially be a week-long headache for me." Mom clamped her iron grip down on my shoulder, and began to drag me away, despite me hissing, kicking, and screaming enough to make any three year old proud.

*Fionna's POV*
I grinned as Marshall appeared, but it quickly slid off of my face. His eyes were clouded, and when he looked at me, it seemed as if he was looking beyond me, as if something over my shoulder was drawing his attention.
"Marshall, are you okay?"
"This will never work." He even sounded different.
I drew my sword. "Who are you, and where is Marshall?"
He opened his arms as if for a hug. "I am Marshall."
"Prove it."
He sighed, then turned into Honoria. "I was putting minimal effort into this facade anyway. Now, are you sure you don't want to leave while you can? Surely you can see that Marshall is no longer your little wandering bard. He is going to make something of himself. Why stand in the way of that?"
I snorted. "I've read the stories. That isn't going to work on me."
Honoria sighed and rubbed her temples. "And now I have to go over it again... he'd eat your soul bit by bit if you lived down there, unintentionally. He'd be chased around mercilessly by peons up here. There is no good end to you two being together."
"We could live in the forest!"
"And now I have to explain this to idiot teenagers..." Honoria breathed, closing her eyes.
I scowled. "I'm 19."
"You act as if you're sixteen. You can't always have what you want. You want Marshall to be happy, yes? Then let him live his life."
"He doesn't want--"
"Has he mentioned coming back up here to this fetid, backwater land? You are the only thing he finds worthwhile here, and your death would crush him."
"Then why isn't he here himself?!"
"Because he is as annoyingly stubborn as you." Honoria huffed, crossing her arms. "And I have a few deals to make, so this is just a courtesy visit to tell you that he will never, ever be returning."
"Wh-- you can't promise that!"
"I can, and I will. That's what I just did."
"What if he sneaks out?"
"Then rest assured that I have a good reason for letting him do so." She yawned. "Goodbye now, little human. I have work to--"
I charged forward, and her hand snapped up at the last moment, enclosing my sword. My momentum carried me forward a little (without my sword).
"Idiot child." Honoria sighed.
"I'm going to free him!"
"Free him from what? A happy life?"
"We're soulmates, we're meant to be together!" I snarled.
She rolled her eyes. "Do you think every soulmate ever has died at the exact same moment? That they remained extremely faithful? In all honesty, you should be lucky you got this much. Goodbye, little human."
She turned to go, then turned slowly to look at me. "And if you're pregnant... that is the only time that you may contact me, and me alone. I'd rather my grandchild didn't die because of an ignorant human being unable to understand a demon's needs."
I flushed, and she rolled her eyes. "Perfect. Well, the pink one knows how to find me. Good day, Blondie."
