Fire

We walk down a road that we found in hopes that we would find someone that could tell us where we are.

" good god my feet hurt so fucking bad!" she whines

" well find something soon"

" but, It's almost sunset. I wanna sit down and take a break from all this walking and 'relax' the best I can. Please?"

I sigh and not my head slowly looking un impressed and laugh

" what?"

"nothing."

I smile at her and look at her lips. It kind of sucks that were taking a break from finding people. But I'm happy that were stalling.

" okay well you rest i going to use our last hour to find something or someone, so you wait here ill be back."

"can you wait with me?"

"I want so see if i can find something like food, water, fire wood or see if their is a house up the road."

"okay." she pouts.

I wave good bye to her and continue down the road, passing dark green ferns, orange maple trees and an surrounded by the scents of the pine trees surrounding me. The woods are so quiet at this time all of the birds are asleep and the nocturnal animals are wakening up the rivers are hushed. As i look at the green forest it gets darker and darker making it hared for me to see. I find some fire wood and pick it up grabbing some smaller sticks for kindling. I look up to see apples small green apples. They might be small but they look delicious on my third day with no food, just looking at them makes my stomach 10x more hungry. I grab a bunch and stuff them into my hoodie pocket letting the fire wood drop into the ground. I pick up the wood after apples are practically falling out of my pockets. I run back to ruby with a huge smile on my face.

"what did you find?"

"look!"

I raise my arms causing some apples the size of clementines to fall out of my pockets. She grins so wide it makes me chuckle.

"Wow! Food. Oh my god!" she says laughing.

She jumps over to me and grabs the biggest apple from the mile and rubs it off on her tight pink slightly dirt stained shirt, and takes a large bite out of it. She moans savouring the taste of each bite. I lay the wood down and pick up a random apple and take a bight, its sour and crunchy. It tastes so good, it feels so good to finally eat something. Ruby grabs my hand and leads me to a little spot with a rock and sits down pulling me down to sit nest to her. We eat our apples and watch the sunset.

I get off the rock and lay out the wood and prepare it o be lit... But i don't know how to light a fire.

" ruby ummm do you know how to ummm maybe light a fire?"

" maybe. I was a scout for a few years. I can see if i still can."

She opens her purse and pulls out a lighter.

"yep i remember."

"okay good... Why do you have al lighter?"

"I just do, its not important."

Hmm. Okay then. I watch her grab a thin peace of bark and light it and watch her gather little twigs and lay the lit bark underneath them. The twigs light and she puts a small log on top and the flame dims. She blows lightly under the log and the log ignites and she smiles. The light orange light of the fire allows me to see her face. Her beautifully sculpted face.

"good job."

I'm kind of nervous, taking a break in the woods with this amazing girl. Surrounded by all the creatures of the night yet warm for the first time in like three days. The longer i sit the more my feet ache. I sit down on the dry grass next to the path. Ruby gets up and sprawls across the grass next to me and leys her head on my thigh. I wonder if she'll stay with me when i get her home... Wait scratch that... Correction, want to be with me when we get back. Her family will probably not want me to be around her after me taking her.

"what are you thinking about? Me?" she asks with a giggle.

"Ironically, yea. I'm thinking about, you. Well you and me. Us. I don't know."

" what about us? Like you and me or 'you and me'?"

" I was just wondering if we are just temporary, if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend i---"

" i do... Have a girlfriend. Her name is Maya, you remind me of her. She's just like you. But i don't think its going to last she is ridiculously serious and i think she's been seeing other people behind my back. You n the other hand seem loyal and in need of love and affection. But i do have a question for you. Do you have a partner?"

" No. I don't have a 'boyfriend' i have a roommate with benefits that I've been well 'with' for 2 years. But we have never been in an official relationship before. I love him but i don't feel like he has ever wanted t be with me."

"oh."

" but i think I'm really falling for you. Forgetting about him will defiantly be hard but he'll never like me back. I bet he feels like more of a babysit--"

"okay umm forget i asked."

"sorry. He is kind of what i was running from. I mean i was running from alot of things. But mostly my problems. And he was one of them."
