12 YEARS LATER
Senior year. Where it all ends but begins at the same time. It passes in a blink of a eye but feels so slow. Or so I've heard. Either way it was one step closer from leaving this town. Just one step away, a hop and a skip.
A loud bang fills my room and I jump up. It's to early to start this. I bang my fist against the wall.
"So you're up? What a surprise" I shake my head at his words.
"Yes, Jake there is a first time for everything!" I only hear him laugh. And I lay back down trying to rest a bit more. Before a loud bang fills the room once again.
"I don't hear you getting up!" He shouts and I grunt in annoyance.
I reluctantly get up from the warmth of my sheets. To zombie walk to the bathroom where I brush my teeth and turn the water on. Once the water touches my skin I feel more awake and a bit of relief. The drops roll down my body and I rise out my hair with coconut scented shampoo and conditioner. I wash my body with strawberry body wash. I stay under the water for a bit thinking about the day that's gonna unfold ahead of me today.
Once I get out I'm greeted with the cold. I wrap a towel around myself and sprint to my room where I find Jake looking at himself in the mirror. I clear my throat and he turns around with a smile.
"Finally you're out. I've been holding in my shi-"
"Do not finish that sentence! Are you done checking yourself out so I could change?" I question.
"I think I look quite dapper don't you think Alice?" I roll my eyes at him and stiffen a laugh.
"Sure you do now out you go bud" I push him towards the door.
"We're leaving in ten minutes by the way" I push him with the door before shutting it.
I put on high waisted blue shorts and a white crop top. I throw on my favorite chucks and put my hair up because I'm to lazy to fix it. I sling my bag over my shoulder and head down stairs where Jake is patiently waiting for me with a roll of his eyes. My dad is sitting at the table with toast in his hands.
"Good morning daddy" I say while walking up to him. He only looks up for a split second before refocusing on his bread.
"Good morning" he mumbles and just like that he's heading upstairs again.
I only look down disappointed. Why on earth did I think today would be different? That he would actually look at me or carry a real conversation before running off trying to avoid me.
Jake is by my side before I realize it and just rubs my shoulder giving me an encouraging smile. I don't give one back to him though because I can't force myself to this morning."Let's go" I say while walking towards the door. Jake follows behind me. "Do you want me to drive or you?" I ask him while we reach the car.
"You can if you want" I shrug my shoulders and reach for the keys. We both climb in and I start the car.
"What do you wanna listen to?" Jake askes me while scrolling thru his phone. I shrug my shoulders. "This will cheer you up" he says before bumping Ignition by R Kelly on.
A smile spreads across my face and he only laughs a little. We both sing the lyrics loudly while heading to school. Ten minutes later I pull up to a parking space in the front of the school.
We walk inside together. I keep my head down till we reach inside. Where a couple of glances are shot our way. The stares are better now. Before it would all be pity glances from 1st grade to around 8th grade. But high school it's better. People don't look at us as some fragile kids who'll bust into tears every five seconds and I'm grateful for that.
