Chapter 8: Under the Stars
JADE'S P.O.V:
The fire crackled in front of me, illuminating the rest of the group's sleeping faces. I studied each one of them. Each of them had families, friends, people they left behind, people that miss them.
I know that only one person in my home misses me. And I miss her too. No matter how bitter and self centered she is towards me.
I looked up at the stars again wondering if she saw the same night sky. Just because we're in another realm does it mean she can't see the same night sky?
Was it even pitch dark there?
I studied the half moon, would I even be able to see the next full moon?
I had to stop thinking like this. I heard a snap of a twig in the woods behind me and instantly one name popped into my head. Dave.
I propped myself up on my elbows and gazed at the boy in the sleeping bag next to me. His eyes were shut and his expression was so peaceful. His hair was falling out of it's ski swoop style and it looked good like that.
Gage's light brown hair looked more natural. I had to fight the urge I had to kiss him right there and that feeling frightened me more than anything.
I looked to my left and saw black hair plastered to Elijah's forehead. In the moonlight you could make out a few freckles sprinkled on the arch of his nose.
Both of their mouths were open slightly and I wanted to giggle at how cute they looked when they were sleeping.
Ellie and Graham were in separate sleeping bags and they must have fell asleep gazing at each other because they both were positioned facing each other.
Saunter and Lacey looked so cute together, Lacey's light blond hair reflected the camp fire's light, making it look brighter and shinier than normal.
Her and Saunter were sharing a hunter green sleeping bag and looked so adorable intertwined together like they were.
I looked around and spotted and empty sleeping bag, I searched the other ones coming to a conclusion that it was Carson's.
I was about to get up and look for him when a hand clenched around my mouth. I instantly went into defense mode.
Silently and quickly I flipped my predator over my head and springing to my toes he landed on my sleeping bag.
I recognized him right away as he got up, I dragged him away from the sleeping people and into the trees.
"Carson! What the heck was that?" I asked him puzzled.
"Sorry! It's just that I saw you were awake and I didn't want you to scream or wake the others up," he whispered with a half smile.
"So you decided to approach me by wrapping your hand around my mouth?!" I asked in a whispery voice.
He hesitated before speaking, "precisely."
I laughed at this and started walking on the pine-needled path.
"So you're not angry?" He said genuinely concerned.
"Of course not!" I said smiling.
It was nice to get away from the group and have another friend that was like me and I didn't have to hide things from him.
Like how... I don't think I really wanted to talk about Isabelle. It seemed to soon. Too... recent to the accident. It wasn't my fault though.
It was an accident.
"Are you alright?" He asked me, gazing down at me.
My brows were knit together and I bit my lip and cringed in remembrance.
"Quite.." I spoke quietly.
"What happened?" He asked, sensing my mood.
"You can read me that well?" I asked surprised, normally Nightmares couldn't read each other's moods and auras that quick and easily.
"No, actually I can't read you at all. And I specialize in reading people," he said, the truth hit me hard.
"What do you mean not at all?" I asked feeling hurt.
"No, no, Jade, not in a bad way. It's just that... You're different than the other Nightmares here. You're special."
Carson had a way with words. He seemed like the guy who could soothe anyone with a heartfelt paragraph. It made me wonder about him personally.
I found a nice spot to sit and I sat down immediately at the crook of the tree trunk.
He joined me moments later.
"So tell me about yourself," I said, staring into his eyes.
"What do you want to know?" He asked.
"Everything," I said, grinning like an idiot.
"Well I can tell you now that I'm not that interesting," he said looking me in the eyes.
I shrugged, eager for him to continue.
"I was born and raised in a small town in Washington State, and my father was a nightmare, and as for my mom, well she died turning," he spoke softly.
"She was turning into a nightmare?" I asked quizzically.
"No... She died in the vampyrian process," he said slowly.
"She was turning into a vampyre?" I asked. I had never really met one before but I knew they weren't half as rare as our kind.
It sort of shocked me. But a wave of compassion flooded through me.
"I'm sorry," I said genuinely.
"It's fine Jade," he said with a small smile.
I motioned for him to go on and so he did.
"When I was about 7 I started getting picked on for looking weird and acting different. I was an early bloomer for the change. I was 11 when it fully overcame me. I fought it for a while, the strongest nightmares do. I'm sure you fought. Well, we all heard you did."
"Oh yeah I did a lot. But it didn't help anyone's cause," I said sadly, remembering what happened.
"You know Jade," he said, placing a hand on my knee, " whenever you feel like explaining that story of yours, Im a great listener."
I smiled at his friendliness. He was just so... ordinary and normal. And that was perfect.
"We better get back to the camp," he said standing up and reaching his hand out to take mine.
I grabbed it and he helped me up. Not that I needed the help.
"Will we leave soon?" I blurted out of no where.
"I'm not sure. You'll have to ask Gage about that one," he said casually.
I looked up at the stars again. There was just something that drew me to them.
As far as We were from the camp, we could here the crackling flames, and the yelling of familiar voices.
