Chapter 10:
"Jade?" Gage?" Elijah shouted from below.
I pulled away from the kiss so quickly I fell out of the tree carelessly, landing on the ground on my feet.
"Shit," I said, my arm was bleeding.
Gage climbed down swiftly and Elijah ran up to me and helped me up.
"Are you alright?" he asked, gazing into my eyes.
"Yeah, of course! I'm fine!" I said with an overly artificial smile.
"You're.. bleeding," Gage said, rubbing blood from my arm between his fingers.
"No, no, I think it's just tree sap," I said, trying to avoid the subject and I smeared it off, only having even more appear.
"See," I said rubbing my hands together and making the blood dry.
"No, Jade, you're bleeding. And pretty bad too, let's go get you back to camp," Gage said and they both led me through the woods and into the clearing.
"Hey," Ellie said, popping up next to me.
"Is that blood?" Saunter asked.
"No, it's tree sap," I said attempting to rub it away which only made it worse.
"It's okay, Jade, we're not going to judge you," Lacey said.
She seldom ever talked to me. Matter of fact, it was strange that it was those few words that floated out of her mouth.
"What happened?" Graham asked me.
"I... I fell," I knew I could trust these people.
Lacey led me to sit down and went into her bag quickly. She quickly returned with gauze pads and different bottles of liquid.
"What's that?" I asked as she began to clean the cut.
"Just some stuff to help it heal quickly,' she said smiling.
After she was finished bandaging me up I looked at where I was bleeding on my leg before and noticed there was no mark or trace of where the gash was.
I stared at it completely unaware of Elijah approaching me.
"Are you alright?" he asked, sitting down next to me.
"Yeah I'm fine," I said with a smile.
"What happened up there?" he asked.
"I just.. saw a spider and it freaked me out," I said with an awkward smile, looking at the ground.
"It's alright," he said.
Gage sat down on my other side and I could feel the tension frying in the air.
"Hey, you alright?" he asked.
"Yeah, that spider really startled me," I said with a nervous laugh.
"Yeah well I'm just glad you're okay," he said smiling at me.
I looked at him and then my eyes traveled back to Elijah who gazed back at Gage with envy.
"Same," Elijah said as I noticed something creeping up the treetops.
The sun slowly crawled up the tree trunks and sat just above them, it's rays nudging through the leaves to ignite the campsite.
"Well that was quick," I said astonished at the sun's speed.
"You've never witnessed the realm's sunrise have you?" Graham asked.
"Nope," I said smiling.
"It's pretty isn't it?" Ellie asked as she took a seat at a bench in front of us, joining Graham.
"Definitely," I spoke quietly.
"I wonder if they're still their," Elijah said, looking in the direction of Dave.
"Want to go check it out?" Carson said, coming up from behind us.
"I heard what happened, strange that-" he stopped dead once he saw the glares of the others.
"Oh, I'm sorry," he said frowning.
"It's alright. I mean, yeah, Nightmares aren't supposed to bleed but hey, when did I ever stick to the rules," I said laughing.
"Isn't that for sure," a voice said behind me.
I turned around in horror, gaping at Dave standing above me.
"What are you going to do now young one? You can't run from me," he said, maniacally laughing.
"How the hell did he get through the barriers?" Gage said standing up.
Elijah picked me up to my feet as I was frozen in terror and shock at my step-father before me.
"This is only the tip of the iceberg Jade. You can't run from the past. Because the past is your future. It always has been and it always will be," he said.
"Stop," I said quivering.
"You know nothing about yourself. You don't even know what happened before you woke up on the living room couch. You just remember being older and Isabelle being gone and how all the kids looked at you funny at school. The truth you wish to seek is right under your nose, if you wish to capture it," he reached out his hand to me, disregarding the chaos that swarmed around us.
"Fight him Jade!" Elijah's voice sounded vacant and echoed throughout my mind as I reached for Dave's hand.
No more thoughts sweltered my mind, Nothing. Just a peaceful blankness. But I should have known that wouldn't last for long.
My fingertips lingered on his hand in hesitance and soon an ear-shattering whistle screeched through the dry air as my surroundings swirled to a stop.
"You just portalled," he said smiling.
"I did?" I asked quizzically.
"Yes, and you controlled it," he said, looking at me very proudly.
"How? I've never been able to before?" I was quite puzzled.
"The vacancy in your mind? That was you realizing that you needed to go somewhere to learn about yourself. And that place? Is here," he motioned around with his hand.
I was majorly confused.
We stood in the middle of an empty graveyard, in broad daylight with casual clothes on.
"What is this place?" I asked.
"Why don't you let your mind open up and tell you," he spoke wisely.
I stared at my surroundings with disappointment until a sudden rush of knowledge surged through me, and the first thing I did, was kneel to look at her grave stone.
