TW: Fire]
John's POV:
You sign to Dave, looking into his shades with curiosity, "What's wrong? Did you copy some nerds homework and get caught?" You kid, doing something like a voiceless chuckle, where only puffs of air came out.
Dave got that familiar smile on his face, where he just looks kind of amused by something, but as soon as he started speaking, it left. "John, I've been wanting to ask you about something."
"John!" You hear a voice calling your name down the hallway, and Dave instantly seems to tighten up a little. You feel kind of bad for him, because whatever it was must have been important enough for him to wait for you and drag you aside.
You wave to Vriska, who is now coming up to you and the blond with her sure-fire walk. "Hey, Dave is it?" She greets, not interested or nicely, just as a gesture. You smile, glad that she remembered his name, and kind of glad that Dave wasn't walking away like he had the last time.
But you look at him, and he seemed kind of down. His shoulders were slumped, and his bleak face seemed to call out his emotions, even if he didn't really want it to. You had become the master at reading expressions because of all of the sign-language classes you had to go through as a kid.
Before you could lift your hands to sign to him, he seemed to change his mood. "Yeah, and you're Vriska?"
You internally let out a sigh of relief. This seemed like it would go well. Besides, you liked Dave and Vriska, and it wouldn't end well if they weren't getting along.
"Right! Glad to know that someone can remem8er my name. You won't 8elieve how people have messed it up." She started, and soon enough they're talking some and the minutes go by before the bell is about to ring.
"You seem like a cool kid, Strider." Vriska left with that goodbye to him, before turning to you. "W8 for me after school?"
You nod in agreement, then you and Dave head into math class, sitting down in the desks next to each other. Instantly, you pull out a pencil and paper and begin writing, "what did you wanna say in the hall?"
You pass the sheet to Dave, and as he writes the bell goes off and you're taking out your binders and preparing to show Mr. Milkshake your homework.
Quickly, Dave plopped the paper on your desk, and you look down to read. "oh just wanted to know where you sit at lunch? and if youd mind if me and my brother joined you?"
Your lips pulled back in a grin. Was this it? Why the hell was he so worried about this? You wrote back that it was fine, and gave a drawing of the cafeteria and circled the area you sat in before handing the paper across the isle to the shaded Strider.
Sometime, not immediantly, but soon, you receive the paper back. "you call that a drawing?" It read, "check this out". At the bottom of the paper was a drawing. None like you have ever seen before. The art, it was amazing. The style choice was obvious-it was supposed to look like the most geniusly planned out shitty art work, making it entirely ironic. It had one character with dark hair and one with hair left blank, one of them fallen down the stairs and a close up on the other with the words, "I warned you about the stairs, bro."
You looked at Dave, waited till he looked at you, and softly made a slow clap as you stared into the void of his shades.
You ducked your head down, drawing a fantastic remastered version of Nic Cage meeting up with his family in Con Air. Tears swelled up in your eyes, the scene was just so heart warming. You reach over to give the paper to Dave once again before it was ripped out of your hands by someone other than Dave.
