Where am I? There's nothing but darkness here and that sickeningly sweet smell. It's so difficult to place what the odor is, especially when it's overpowering me to the point of nausea... but I think I can pick up a hint of cherry mixed with sweet grass. Whatever, if I stand here much longer I will puke; I start walking I don't know where I'm going or why I'm going there but the temperature is dropping and the wind is picking up. I soon realize I am in a forest but there is no animals moving or birds chirping, just darkness and the wind. I start walking a little faster, then running, something is after me, someone is after me. Hold up, I am October Herring, a freaking Vampire, what exactly am I running from? I stop on a dime and turn around just long enough to see a glimpse of someone darting to the right shielded by the trees.

"HEY! Wait up!" I run after them just as they round another corner, picking up my speed I begin the chase, always a second too late but I keep running. The chase continues until I turn a corner and skid to a stop. There they are, sitting in a clearing with their back towards me. It's a girl, her long blonde hair is draped behind her shoulders, she has on a colbat blue cardigan, grey shorts and and black sneakers. She seems natural except for the fact that she is abnormally still, and glowing, what the fuck? People don't just glow.

I hesitantly start to approach the girl... "Hello? Why were you running from me?" As I get closer the smell is getting stronger, so strong I can hardly stand it. I'm getting light headed and everything is glowing around me, I reach out to touch her shoulder-

*BANG* "GET THE FUCK UP OCTOBER."

I jump out of the top bunk landing on my feet somehow and glare at my brother.

"Well good morning to you to!"

He sneers at me then walks out of my room leaving my door hanging on one hinge from him ripping it open. I need to talk to someone about what's going on in my head, but only a vampire would understand and none of them want to deal with me... maybe Father will listen... it's only 7 am so perhaps he is not asleep yet."Father?" I knock quietly enough that if he is sleeping I will not wake him... No answer. Oh well.

I grab a juice box for the road and then head out the door to school. I walk until I am done with my breakfast then stick the empty container in my bag and run the rest of the way. It doesn't take me but twenty minutes total to get there so I have a ton of time on my hands. I decide to go by my Chemistry and Mathematics classrooms to collect the work I missed yesterday; Professor Cummings was busy so I easily got in and out of my Chemistry classroom. However, Professor McMahn was concerned. I finished writing down my assignments and was headed out the door with 18 minutes to spare before first block when he stopped me.

"October, might I have a word?" I glance back and my professor is leaning on his desk with his arms crossed looking my way. Great. I turn around and face him my hand still on the door frame.

"Sir?"

"Well, I would just like to ask how you are doing? You have been distant the past couple weeks in class and something tells me that you were not signed out by a guardian yesterday afternoon." A smirk creeps onto his face as I try to keep my anger in check and my manners on the front lines.

"With all do respect sir, I am always distant, I have never participated in class or cared much for other's friendship or concern. I maintain excellent marks and frankly what happens in my life outside of this classroom is private." I start to leave the room but stop right as I cross the threshold, "Also, if you have suspicions about my absence yesterday, feel free to call my Father. I am sure he would love to chat with you." I shoot him a menacing glare and then walk towards Fine Arts and my soon to be forced "friend", ugh that is so not happening, I have no need or use for friends. And how dare that filthy Servile waste my time to accuse me of truancy, I was ILL yesterday, I still am for a matter of fact, perhaps I will leave school early today as well.

I get to my classroom and see Professor Aldridge on the phone, no one else is in class yet seeing as the first bell has just rung. I set my school bag on the floor beside my desk and play on the piano until she comes out of her office.

"Good morning October! How are you feeling today?"

"Fine Professor, thank you."

"Good, Good, now our new student shall be here any moment, here is a copy of her schedule, and thank you for taking on this charge."

"My pleasure Professor" I say in my thickest voice as I look over the girl's schedule. She has Fine Arts with me today, then Agricultural Science , and History, Mathematics. So she will be in my first and last class of the day on our transition days. Then on our regular days she has French IV, Phys-Ed, History, and Mathematics. Eww French, but whatever at least I'll only be expected to be civil during one class on those days.

There's a knock on the door and someone comes in but I don't look up as I finish looking over the girl's schedule. "Hello, Professor Aldridge?" I jump off of the piano bench and about a foot away. As she speaks the sickeningly sweet smell from my dreams hits me and my eyes go wide. It's her, the one from my dream, the green shirt and shoes, the blonde hair, the nausea.

I tune into their conversation midway, "I see, well this is October, she will be aiding you in adjusting to the school and town. October come say hello."

I can't move, there's no way... those eyes... My eyes are wide with shock as I take it all in, she is looking down like she doesn't really want to see me.

"October, don't be rude." I look over at Professor Aldridge and force my feet to move.

"Hello, my name is October Herring, and you are?" I offer my hand as she answers me without looking directly at me "Melanie Gright, pleasure to meet you." When she doesn't take my hand Professor coughs and she takes my hand wearily. What the-? This feeling of electricity shoots through the both of us and the overwhelming odor changes into the most enticing smell in the world. She looks directly in my eyes with the deer in headlights look and I look at her the same way as we drop hands and it is all gone. The original smell comes back as strong as ever and I try not to show how bad I want to barf as our classmates trickle in and we all take our seats. Melanie's next to mine.
