In the best interest of my newborn, I sought a second opinion from a high risk ob-gyn. While there was no doubt my blood pressure had been high, I hoped a new doctor would shed a better light on what I was facing. Or at least, he would make it sound less scary than my original doctor had. I wanted a realistic answer with the assurance that I was well taken care of.
My new perinatologist came highly recommended from the women in my parenting class. They swore by his methods and advice, which he provided on the local news twice a week. He was the Dr. Oz of our area, and had quite the following on social media. His popularity, also, made it that much harder to get an appointment with him. But if his 3 month waiting list was any indication of his obstretic abilities, it seemed I would be in good hands.
Of course, I didn't have 3 months to wait and see him. I needed a high risk doctor last week, and couldn't wait for another opinion. Whether it was my brother or Jai who called in a favor, I had an appointment one day after his office staff claimed to have no openings.
"Did you call?" I asked Jai, as we sat in the waiting room.
He shook his head, concentrating on the forms in front of him. "You know this would be a lot easier if we were married. You'd be able to be under my health insurance, and it would be a lot cheaper."
With the price of my most recent lab work, having decent health insurance seemed like a reasonable justification for getting married. In fact, it seemed economically sound to be married and I had to admit the idea was growing on me. It wasn't the money or the health insurance that I was looking for though. I was beginning to enjoy the idea of having "a person."
Never before had I had "a person." The one individual who was there for you both physically and emotionally. The one individual in the world who was stuck with you through the good and the bad. Your person, and Jai was mine.
"Maybe we can run down to the courthouse afterwards." I winked.
A smirk appeared on his face, but he kept his gaze towards the papers. "So do I put single on this form? There's no "it's complicated" option."
With a small shove, I laughed. "Single will be fine for now."
Jai finished filling out the forms, and returned them to the woman behind the glass partition. He stretched out his long legs, and tapped his fingers against his thighs.
"You never did tell me how I was able to get in so quick." I pointed out. "I know it had to be you or Miles."
"Does it matter who it was?" He questioned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "This guy is supposed to be the best in the area, and comes highly recommended."
"And he doesn't exactly take just anyone."
"You're not just anyone."
"Because of you and Miles."
"Well I can assure you it wasn't me. I didn't even know you were trying to get an appointment with this doctor until you'd gotten it." Jai assured me, and I believed his tone.
"So it must have been Miles."
"Love, you will make yourself crazy trying to figure it out. You have the appointment, we are here. That's all that matters."
I leaned back in my seat. "I don't like owing people anything."
Jai chuckled, "You don't owe anybody anything. It's like a gift. No one gives a gift hoping to get something back. You do it because it makes the other person happy."
