I woke up early on Sunday morning. Getting ready, I put on my formalest-casual work clothes.

It was a beautiful day. The sunshine was breaking through and causing a warm day, birds were flying free, and there wasn't a single siren to be heard in the distance. When I got to Jitters, Eddie was already there with two coffees at a table.

     "Hi," I said smiling.

"Iris! Uh - you like caramel, right?"

"Love caramel. Thank you. And - thank you, again, for covering my dad's shifts. Like I said before, it means a lot to me."

"It's nothing, really." He said with the same tone of importance he used before. "How is Allen doing, anyway?"

I half smiled and shrugged, "I'm not entirely sure."

We had just finished our coffees when the walkie-talkie on Eddie's belt buzzed. Then voices came from it. "Thawne report back to the police station A.S.A.P."

     "I'm sorry-" said Eddie disappointedly.

"No, no, no, go," I said "duty calls."

Eddie stood up, nodded to me, and started off. "Thanks again," I said after him. I looked at my phone. It was 11:00. I went over to the counter to clock into work.

It was a slow work day. Not very many people came in. By the time my shift ended, it felt like a year. I figured I'd pick up a coffee for dad.

When I got to the hospital, I spotted Dad talking on the phone nearby.

"Hey," I said once he got off, handing Dad his coffee.

"Hey - thanks." said Dad wearily.

"Dad, you look terrible, did you sleep at all the last two weeks?"

      He shook his head. "Barely."

"Come on, why don't we go outside and get some fresh air," I said. "We can go across the street and get dinner."

Dad smiled and motioned a yes. The late December air outside was the perfect amount of cool and moist. Distant clouds were moving in fast. There was no one in the diner across the street other than the cashier and the cook. Dad and I took the table closest to the door.

Dinner was mostly quiet. Though Dad told me of having to hire another detective partner, as his unfortunately died the night of the particle accelerator explosion two weeks ago.

"I have a choice between Brian Leigh, and Eddie Thawne." He said, and I looked up at him, remembering earlier today. I didn't think it wise to tell him of today, so I just asked, "Have you thought it over much?"

"Yeah, I think I'm gonna let Leigh pass. Thawne seems more experienced."

I opened my mouth to say something when all the lights in the cafe flickered. Dad and I simultaneously looked out the window. The street lights seemed to have done the same. After a moment the lights stopped. I turned my focus over to the hospital where Barry was. The lights there hadn't turned back on.

Then Dad's phone rang. "Hello?" He asked, and then stared at me, just listening.

"Dad? Dad what is it?"

"We'll be right over," he said and hung up the phone and started for the door. "Barry went into cardiac arrest again-"

"What?!" I asked running after him.
"Dad - wait -"
When I got out the door Dad was already half way across the street.

When we reached the hospital we were directed to a hall full of patients. When I saw Barry, there were three others around him. One was a girl with strawberry blonde hair, not much older than me, by the looks of it. The two other were men, one, very young looking, maybe still in his teens. He had long black hair down his neck and dark skin. The other, very familiar, had messy black hair, wearing glasses and all black, was in a wheelchair.

But when the man in the wheelchair and Dad made eye contact for a slight second, the three went off.

"Now who the hell was he?" Dad asked walking over to where they were.

"I don't know," I said "But they seem familiar."

I spent the rest of the night there at the hospital; I was a little scared to leave. Heading out to work, and remembering last night, I took out my phone to try and figure out who those three people were. But not watching where I was going, I bumped into someone.

"Oh, I'm so sorry," I said when they turned around, and I saw a tall blonde man with blue eyes. "Eddie!"

"Oh, hey, Iris," he said.

"What are you doing here?"

"Just taking in some sick prisoners. I take it your visiting Allen?"

"Y-yeah" I said moving the hair out of my eyes. "I'm just heading out to work soon."

"Oh, that's good. Hey, uh, yesterday was really nice, I'm sorry I had to run out on you. . Maybe I could make it up to you," he said with a nervous smile.

I smiled. "That would be nice!"

"Great! How about. . eight o'clock tonight?'

"Sounds great!" I said.

"Great! Well, see you then!" He said with a smile and walked off.

I can't believe I just got a date with a really nice and cute guy.

Dinner that night with Eddie was perfect. We went to the fanciest resturaunt in Central City. I tried to pick the cheapest thing on the menu, but it was $40 for the appetizer.

Eddie had complimented me many times there. I thought it was going really well. At the end of it, Eddie asked me to come as his double to his cousin's mansion for their Christmas party. I had entirely forgot next week was Christmas. Even worse, this is my first Christmas since I was nine without Barry. But, I pushed that away until later and agreed to go, making Eddie Smile, really, really wide.

It was three days before Christmas. I decided to stop by the hospital to bring Dad a coffee. It was nighttime, and the room Dad and Barry were in was all dark, except for a small lamp and a bright television. Dad's head was lolling around as he was trying to stay awake.

"Dad," I started, handing him the coffee. "It's been three weeks, you barely eat or sleep, you should probably go home at some point. ." I said worryingly.

"Hey, baby." He said, exhausted. "I'll go home when Barry does."

Suddenly there was a fast beeping from the monitor that was counting Barry's heartbeat, and Barry started unconsciously spazzing, grunting, and shaking uncontrollably.

"Oh my god!" I rushed over.

"Help! My son's seizing!" Dad Elle's out the door, then running back to the side.

"They said he was stable!" I cried.

The lights turned on, and a doctor came in saying "I need the room!" And we were pushed outside. I ran down the hall, crying into my hands.

A/N:
Hello, everyone! I'm so sorry this took so long to upload. I've been busy and honestly forgetful. Also I do apologize for how short this chapter is, especially as it only covers three weeks of "9 months." But I really wanted to get it uploaded and not have anybody wait any longer. Thanks to those who have been reading so far! I'll try to have the next chapter up soon.
Xo,
Anna
