JITTERS CAFÉ
CENTRAL CITY
SEPTEMBER 20, 2021
I walk swiftly through Jitters, sending off an air of confidence around me. My shift had just ended, and it's been a good day. Barry waking up two days ago cheered me up an almost scary amount.I spot Eddie sitting at a table.
"Can I get you anything, Detective?" I ask.
"You can stop acting like you can't stand me when your dad's around." He says, tone a mix of sadness, anger and annoyance.
"Aww, but I like having a boyfriend who isn't shot to death." I kiss him. I wasn't the first to use titles, yesterday he called me his girlfriend. That's all I need.
We break apart and both smile. But my smile fades when I look up and see Barry.
DOWNTOWN
CENTRAL CITY
SEPTEMBER 20, 2021
Me and Barry walked down the empty street in silence."You can't tell my dad," I blurt out. "He doesn't know about me and Eddie."
"Doesn't seem like anyone's in on this secret." Barry says annoyed, and maybe, angry?
"I was gonna tell you," I rush out. "When you were in the hospital, Eddie covered my father's shifts so that we could both be with you. I thank him with a cup of coffee, and things just sort of. . Happened. And it's good!" I smile.
"Yeah but, dating your partner's daughter? Isn't that against department regulations?"
"Why are you so upset?" If I didn't know better, I'd almost say Barry was. . Jealous? No way! He can't be.
"I just don't like having to lie to you dad, you know?" He shrugs.
I open my mouth to reply but am cut off by the loud sound of tires screeching against pavement.
Barry and I whirl around to see a car, being tailed by two police cars, traveling fast, coming straight toward us. I don't know what happened, one moment I was staring at the car that was a mere inch from me and Barry before I find myself sitting down with my hair over my face a moment later -
I move the hair out of my eyes and look around. All the cars are gone - and Barry! I get up and sway a bit. Guess I'm a bit dazed. I gain my feet in a quick second and run down the sidewalk. I arrive just in time to see - nothing.
A sudden cloud of smoke blinds me. Not knowing what to do, I stay put. The fog clears a minute later and I see Barry in the middle of the street, looking around for something/
"Barry!" I call out running to him. "What happened?" I ask. I then turn around to see the a car, or what was a car, scattered across the street, the driver piled underneath.
"Oh my gosh." I cover my mouth with my hands.
LATER ON
Siren lights flashed all around me. The medics from the ambulance confirmed the driver underneath the car to be dead.
"That poor man," I say to Barry. "The way that fog came in, I've never seen anything like it!"
"Barry! Iris," I turn to see a very distressed Joe West hurrying to my side.
"I'm alright, dad." I assure him.
That seems to relieve him a bit. "What were you thinking having her out here?" He asks not the gentlest to Barry. "And I told you" he says now to me, "when you see danger you run the other way! You're not a cop!"
"Because you wouldn't let me!" I say in defense.
"You're dang right." He mutters.
"Joe, I need to talk to you." Barry says quietly.
"It can wait." He says, his attention somewhere else.
"No, now. ." He says and they move to the side talking quietly.
They go on for a minute or so before I hear dad yelling.
"But I knew it, the jury knew it, and now he's paying for what he did!"
"Dad, enough!" I jump in. I mknow what he's talking about, the case of Barry's mothers murder.
"Uhn-uh, Iris," he ignores me "I have done my best to take care of you since that night, and I have never asked for anything in return, not even a thank you, but what I do ask now is that you for once in your life see things as they are."
Barry walks off angrily.
"Sir," Eddie comes over to talk to dad, so I move away. I make sure not to look at Eddie.
After he leaves, I ask dad what got him so angry at Barry.
"He thinks the driver of the car was Clyde Mardon. And the eye witness sketch from the bank robbery confirms it. But I don't believe it, which is what I told him."
"But how can that be, he's dead!" I say, confused.
"I know, that's why I don't believe it. Barry also thinks Clyde has some kind of. . Superhero. . Harry Potter. . Magical powers."
"I hope that lightening strike didn't damage his mind." I say. dad just stares sadly at me in silent agreement.
