CHAPTER 1

Charlotte's POV

"It's hot," I mumbled to myself as I wiped droplets of sweat that formed on my forehead. I shrugged off my jacket and tied it around the handle of my luggage. I had just gotten off the plane about ten minutes ago and the temperature change was, in simple words, unforeseen. It is almost the end of summer but yet it was still as hot as an oven in Oregon. I came here from Bristol as an exchange student so I was not used to this kind of heat.

Even though I was not the brightest student, I somehow still managed to get just enough credits to be qualified for an interview and I really had to pat myself on the back because that interview was the reason I was here at this moment.

On to some introductions. Name's Charlotte Johnson. I do not see any reason why I should introduce my family, but why not? So, my parents go by the names, Christopher and Natalie Johnson. It has been sixteen years since they had conceived me and fourteen years since my brother, Andrew came along.

"Where is that taxi I called an hour ago?" I muttered to myself. I stood by one of the doors to the terminals, enjoying the sudden gush of air every time the automatic doors opened but even so, it was just too hot for my body to handle. As I had said before, I came from Bristol and over there, summer was not as cruel to me as it was here.

I was brushing off the hair that was stuck to my forehead when my phone buzzed; Andrew.

'Arrived?'

I hit reply and typed, 'Yeah, what are you doing up so late?'

Time zones.

By the time I had finished typing, the taxi I had been waiting for appeared. 'Finally,' I thought.

Despite travelling far from home, I was always taught to pack light because it was easier for mobility, so getting on the taxi was not very taxing for both me and the driver.

'Wilson High Accommodation, please,' I told the person and off we went.

'I'm so glad you're on the other side of the world,' the message on my phone showed. I could literally feel his eyes rolling as I was reading his message. I shrugged off his usual attitude and paid attention to the road instead.

I arrived about twenty minutes later and was so relieved of how shaded it was here. The walk I had to the reception was mostly under large trees and surprisingly it was quite windy. Within minutes I was checked in and unlocking the room to my door. Unexpectedly, it was quite spacious and the carpet did not feel as if it had not been vacuumed for decades; as the reviews had told me.

I hopped on the bed and stared out the window and instantly squinting from the light. It was cool to have the bed by the window but it was not, if the sun would not stop bothering you. Now, I was no vampire but the glaring of the sun was not something I was fond of. Also, I was not a sunglasses kind of person and I did not usually own a hat so I often had to squint my way through the day if it was sunny back in Bristol but then again, it was often never sunny there. Now that I was here, there was nothing I could do about it, right?

I suddenly thought of giving my parents a tinkle of how the room was but when I looked around, there wasn't much to say as it was kind of similar to how my room was but a mini version of it. The toilet to the left as you come in, with the cupboard opposite it, the study table that came with an Ikea lamp at the corner with probably the shower on the other side of the wall and the bed by the window with the study table at the foot of it. Of course with the side table on the right side of the bed. One comment that I had for the bed though was that it had a really nice frame. My thoughts was cut off from the constant buzzing of my phone.

"Are you ignoring me?" Andrew's voice came through the speakers coarser than usual.

"Andrew, is that you?" I said sarcastically, implying his change of his vocal chord.

"Yeah?" he replied sounding obviously concerned.

"Don't tell me you got fooled by that," I said bluntly.

He laughed, "As if. I would not have been fool by such obvious sarcasm."

"Yeah, keep telling yourself that and no, I was not ignoring you. Just didn't know what to reply. By the way, it seems puberty hit you hard, huh?" I snickered.

"Shut up. Dad won't stop picking on me already so don't you start, please."

"Well, I can't help it. My little brother is growing up, makes me proud."

"You wouldn't be saying that when you come back because I'll be taller and bigger and you'll be so scared you wouldn't dare take a step into my room without permission like you always do," he said and I felt the smug from his voice. What he did not know, while he was giving his almighty speech, was that he was on loud speaker and I had started to unpack. With his voice being so low it was too easy to ignore.

"Hello, are you there?" He said after quite a long pause.

"Yeah, you done? I'm kind of unpacking so you can go on," I said, clearly distracted.

"You're cruel! Just wait and see!" he shouted, his voice cracking.

I choked a laugh, "Your new voice makes you sound hilarious!"

He bickered a respond and then our conversation went on until dusk.
