CHAPTER 44
Lara's POV
Shopping with Lorraine was great. We went to shop for clothes as well as watched a movie together. Who says only night movies give the feels? It was an amazing hangout which I'd never expected it to be.
Everything was going well until she received a call which sounded quite urgent and that she needed to leave immediately. Maybe a last minute meeting? Or a client problem?
I didn't mind at all since she'd spent her half day off with me. After she left, I figured that I would have my dinner here and get some groceries before heading home.
After I paid for my groceries, I dug out my cell. I wanted to give Lia a call to see if she could give me a ride home. I speed-dialled her number but before I could put my cell to my ears, the screen drained black.
My phone died.
Seeing no other options, I waited for the bus. Ten minutes passed, still no sign of the bus. Just then, I remembered that there was a shorter route I could take. The route was quite quiet and lonely but I'd walked through it a couple of times before. I did come out safely, didn't I?
Though today might be productive seeing that I bought enough clothes to fill my summer wardrobe, I just wanted to get this day over it.
All I could think of now was my bed.
I headed straight for it and it was alright at first. It was then I turned into an alley when suddenly I felt shivers running down my spine. It was even creepier at night. I realized the other times I took this route were all before sunset. No one was in sight, and I was the only one there.
I couldn't be more thankful that Lorraine offered to drop off my shopping bags at my dad's so I could pick up my groceries. Clutching my grocery bags to my chest, I picked up my pace until I exited the alley.
I relaxed a little before I felt a presence behind me. I stopped and turned to see who it was but the dim street lamp did not allow me to see far. I continued on my way, alert for any footsteps.
There it was again, the sound of someone walking behind me.
Fear gripped me and I hurried on. My house was still two streets away, there was no way I could make it without escaping from whoever it was. I realized it was better if I attacked before he did.
I turned to a dark alleyway and set down my groceries bag. I looked around to see if I could find any weapon which I could use to attack with. To my luck, my eyes spotted an object which looked like an unwanted baseball bat.
I picked it up.
A drop of sweat trickled down my neck. My palms were already sweating, and my heartbeat was thudding away.
The shadow was getting closer.
I held the bat up with a firm grip, ready to attack.
Someone yanked the bat out of my hands and a hand instantly covered my mouth from behind. I attempted to shout for help and pry the hand from my mouth but failed both.
Before I knew it, I was dragged to a small, dark corner which I didn't even think there was another lane here. It was that dark.
I looked up and was startled to see the person standing next to me, even through the darkness. He held his finger to his lips, signalling me not to make a sound. With my heartbeat still racing against my chest, I managed a nod.
He removed his hand and we watched a dark figure entering the alley. He must had realized he'd lost track of his prey so he broke into a sprint, trying to locate me. I stood frozen as he passed by the corner we were in. He bolted down the alley to the other end of it, and finally out to the streets.
