CHAPTER 45
Lara's POV
After dinner at Taco Bell, we decided to take a walk in a park nearby. It was a little after six in the evening, the day was still bright as ever.
We could see kids in the playground, running around playing tag. Other than that, the park was serene while I took the advantage of it calming down myself from all the stress I was having.
Walking along the path, we stayed in comfortable silence. I was deep in my thoughts when I felt a nudge on my shoes.
I looked down to see a red ball and then picked it up.
I scanned the place to see if any of the kids might lose it while playing with it when there was a slight tug at the hem of my dress.
A little boy seemed to appear out of nowhere. "Um...can I have my ball back?" he asked, shyly.
One word to describe him- cute. Freckles were seen on both sides of his cheeks and he has a red nose. How adorable!
I kneeled down beside him so that we were of the same height. Smiling, I returned the ball to him.
"Thank you," he said, braver than before and smiling back in return. I ruffled his hair before he ran off to re-join his friends.
Without warning I asked Jayden, "Have you ever thought of having any siblings?" I always wanted a sibling, preferably a younger brother.
"Have you?"
I rolled my eyes lightly because it was supposed to be my question. But answered anyways, "Yeah I've always wanted one but the wish died down after parents got divorced."
Right after I mentioned divorce, my heart felt like it had been stabbed a hundred times. I wondered if things would be the same if they didn't divorce back then, if they still loved one another.
Will I have a younger sibling? Or maybe two, or three?
Most importantly, my family would be complete and I would still be living with both of my parents.
"I was close to having one," he muttered, shaking me out of my reverie. My gaze instantly snapped back at him.
"Weeks before the accident, I found out that I was going to have a baby sister," he explained. I knew exactly what he meant by that.
The accident which had changed his life forever.
His eyes grew distant as they were fixed straight ahead.
Shoot. Why do I always have to say the wrong things?
Silence hung thick in the air. I had no idea what to say to him. Why did I even bring this up? Rewind button, please.
It was after a while that he decided to break the silence, though I didn't think he realized that it was completely awkward for me. "Lara, what's your middle name?"
My eyebrows scrunched in confusion. Why was he being so random? One minute he was talking about his past and now he wanted to know my middle name. Unless...
"Was her name Kate?" I asked, connecting the dots.
"Katelyn," his voice cracked. "Katelyn would have been her name."
I felt a sense of familiarity because months ago, he asked me the exact question. Looking at how far we've come, the corners of my lips started to twitch upwards. Well, almost.
Because a sudden realization hit me.
Does he only see me as a sister? Just because I share the almost-similar- name with his sister?
My heart sank at the thought of that.
Charlotte's POV
From our conversation we had a couple of days ago, I think it was safe to say that the cat was finally out of the bag. Daniel had not asked about how I gained my info which I was so grateful of because the last thing I wanted was to reveal about my brother. I did make a promise to myself that if I were to involved Andrew, I would swear to not expose him or I would fail as a sister.
We did speak more about how he ended up wanting me involved in this case. I was not too sure if he was just flattering me or it was the truth but according to him, I was very experienced with this type of issues when to be honest, this was the first time I have encountered such complex backstory. I was quite surprise how I was holding up especially with no backup, and living so far away from my comfort zone. My parents would be so proud of me if they knew how I was doing though sadly, they would never know about this. Before I get distracted with another issue, I think it would be best to explain how I got into being an agent.
It was very simple. It ran through the blood. It began with my great-grandfather who own an agency which involved one of his chosen children which turned out to be my grandfather. My grandfather took over just before my great-grand father passed on and continued the journey. My grandfather, unfortunately being infertile did not expect to give birth to my mother. But when he did, he felt unwilling to bring her up to such a dangerous way of living life because he was too precious to him. Though when my mother had children, my grandfather grew fond of both Andrew and I, and indirectly trained us ever since we were a child. My mother and father have no idea what my grandfather was planning our future and guiding us every step of the way. Just before he passed on, he handed the agency to one of his best man, William Sullivan and introduced me when I was old enough. Because of me, I was able to rub off on my brother, Andrew, who at first was a bit sceptical about joining but when he started to gain so much knowledge about computers he just cliqued with the other computer geeks in the agency. Now, you could say that I am now head of the agency, but I rather not put myself into such situations despite countless of times, Mr. Sullivan told me I was capable of doing so. I did not accept the position because I knew Mr. Sullivan deserved it more. So despite being the heir, I say it is only right to give this opportunity to the one that is actually worth being in that position.
Now, back to the current situation. Things were getting really serious. Exams were coming ahead and I was pretty sure there were more things to unscramble about this case. Daniel said he had a bad feeling about what was about to happen.
He did tell me his brief plan and the reason why Lorraine was somehow involved. He also added that he was able to confirm and had a solid evidence of his mother actually being murdered by his father, Thompson. According to him, Jayden was able to have a chat with Lorraine when he found out about her and apparently, Lorraine and Daniel's mother, were once friends and they had been communicating with Lorraine not knowing that it was such a small world and that Thompson was actually playing around with Lorraine despite being married. Lorraine also stated that by the time she found out about Daniel's mother's relations to Thompson it was slightly too late.
Now, it was to get Lorraine out of sight and come out to the police about Thompson's illegal business and also to finally be able to close the case on his mother's death.
I looked out of the window. The end of winter was up ahead and spring break was coming, who knows what was going to happen when we get back to school after our holidays. Even after all the information I come to know I felt something just was not right because my gut feeling is tingling and it is telling me that there is something off about Lorraine, despite her being the victim.
